    First sand casting

PM me and I'll give you a small bottle I have here. Since we are more or less in the same town, it shouldn't be a problem. Thomas.

    Mini Lathe Tips

Shopshoe gives some great advice here, but there is a couple things I want to add: Get the Best and biggest lathe you can, in that order. Then get the most accessories you can. There is a lot written both on the more inexpensive Asian machines and on used machines, and if you ask 10 people...

    Hello from Norway

For what it may be worth, Model og Elektronikk (a norwegian magazine) did several articles on a fairly nice steam engine some years back. I can't quite remember, but it may have been in a 2005-2007 timeframe. There even was a kit around for it. A quick google suggest this series started in no...

3D Printed Lost Foam Mold Inquiry

I can't see why your approach wouldn't work, but it seems to me to be a bit extra work that may be unnecessary unless you are going to make many of the castings. If you print it with a regular PLA plastic, you can then do "lost PLA", the same way you do lost foam. I haven't tried it myself, but...

here are a few of my ( maybe ) stupid questions

Yes, you can add flux while the boiler is hot, but its more common to do it while its cold. If you use propper flux for your soldering method, it will not boil off too early. You will not have any good experience using plumbers flux for silver soldering, nor silver soldering flux for tin...

Proxxon CNC Mill and nccad9 software

What is your safe Z set to? lets say you have a mill with 200mm of Z travel, and you send it a g-code like "Z-1000" then your controller may throw a error like that. I'd recommend reading one of the basic courses of programming G-code. With the cheat list of M and G codes, its fairly easy to...

    Why Is Steel So Expensive?

I'd rather have one made from O2 or any reasonable steel that can be ground to a sharp edge that holds. The knifes made from old HSS hacksaw blades were the best, but a lot of grinding to get a decent knife from the blade.

    Adding graduations to tailstock spindle

Worse is it dragging a 10 year old thread out of the gutter to comment on it

    Atkinson frustrations

    The rings should be rotating.

    Atkinson frustrations

Just to cover all the basics, power stroke should be the long stroke, and compression stroke the short stroke. What kind of fuel do you use? It may be that it needs more time to run in, but I would expect it to fire and run for a short time after 30hr.

    Atkinson frustrations

Does it move the intake valve? that is just moved by the suction from the cylinder, and the spring is important. Too stiff a spring here would make it not get enough gas. Make sure there isn't too much friction on the intake valve. Does it run assisted? given that it has gas available, does...

For the wick, try regular cotton yarn or even cotton rope like used on boats.

    Vexta Stepper Help

Yes, those are fairly simple to control with a Arduino or other microcontroller. For testing, you can connect a momentary on pushbutton to CW or CCW, and for each push of the button, the motor should move 1 step. I don't remember if H.OFF should be jumpered, but its in the manual for the...

    Gear cutter holder

Actualy, there is a DIN standard (EU norm) for those holes, DIN 58410 if I remember correctly. And that standard being of German orgin, I'm willing to bet there isn't a inch in it anywhere. A interesting thing is that former sovjet cutters also seems to follow this standard. Those cutters can be...

    Gear cutter holder

22mm is common for module (metric) cutters in the range 1-3M. DP cutter (Imperial) have different bore sizes, altough some comming from china has metric bores. Quite nice for us who don't do much imperial, and don't want to stock a set of holders for those as well. 16mm bore cutters are used...

    Information on making patterns

For a flywheel, the easiest way of making them may be using a split pattern, just split it down the middle, and ramming the mold should be easy. Attached a picture of one of my flywheel patterns to illustrate. A couple brass pins keeps the registration between the cope and drag half of the...

    Information on making patterns

If plastic card works for a pattern or not depends on the type of casting you are doing. The pattern size is imho a bit big for investment casting, and die casting probably isn't what you should try for your first casts. Since the pattern will be double sided, greensand casting is faily easy to...

    Myford ML4 spindle

Just tell them that there is buyers for those magazines out there, and some of them fetch a lot of money, that should stop the nagging.

    Casting shrinkage voids

The feeders and risers needs to be so large as to contain a reservoir of molten metal that is feed into the item molded, as it cools and shrinks. You could try a "Bronze casters flask" that molds the part standing up, that way, the shrinkage would be at the end, instead of in the middle of the...

    RongFu RF 25 Drill/Mill

Gus: I have the round collumn RongFu machine, and I find 3 major problems: Y axis backlash difficult to compensate. Round colloumn looses orientation. Lack of low speed makes it hard to do gear cutting. If you get one, make sure to carefully scrape off all paint on the bottom of the...
