    Thoughts on my X3 mill

Yeah, Something is wrong Bill. Your setup or adjustment or something with the machine. .010" deep with a 1/2" endmill in 7075 is absolute nothing for an X3 mill. I have had a cnc'd x3 well over 2 years now. It'll run a 3/4" 2 flute a .1" deep no trouble. A 1/2" 4 flute .1" deep in iron is no...

    Crusader .60s (x2)

wareagle, The ringed piston was just harder to get good compression with. As well as more trouble to make. I was just trying for a lighter piston for more rpm with it. I made the wrist pin from titanium as well :D. DICKEYBIRD, Boy it's been a while since I made those parts, but the cyl head is...

    Crusader .60s (x2)

I built the crusader .60 several years ago. I made every jig and fixture as well. But you really don't need most of them. I built it on a 7x10 mini lathe and mini mill. It was my first engine and I really enjoyed that project. I went and tried several piston combos including an aluminum ringed...

Thank you Chili and I wish you the best with your health! I also find my shop time invaluable in keeping my spirits up and taking my mind of things. Steve :)

    PM Lathe Progress

Due to recent health issues I have not spent much time in the shop. But I managed to make a little more progress on this little guy. I have to say that I found the tiny gear train a bit tedious and tricky to have it all mesh smoothly. I think I have it setup pretty well now. It's getting there...

Cutting a tiny keyway using the mill as a shaper.

ahh but that's the difference, I normally do not retract Z when surfacing with my mill. It would not be to hard to build a solenoid triggered retract mechanism with exact repeatability and keep the Z axis rigid. Maybe in the future.. I did not pre-drill or even retract the Zaxis on any return...

    My basement shop

Stefan, Do you have any more pics or information on your small homebuilt Horizontal mill? It looks very interesting! Steve

Cutting a tiny keyway using the mill as a shaper.

A mach3 Shaper wizard would be very easy to setup up. On my setup the spindle is locked tight to the quill so the bearings take no side load during the scraping process. This setup gives possible a stroke of over 14" on my mill. I see a hitch though and that is the clapper.Having no clapper...

Cutting a tiny keyway using the mill as a shaper.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I used my cnc'd mill. I just used it in manual mode with power feed on the x axis. Without power feed it might have been a little difficult to keep it cutting smoothly each pass. Nice looking shaper! I would really like to own an old shaper one day. Can't seem...

Cutting a tiny keyway using the mill as a shaper.

[Edited to allow playback within the forum] Well I finally got back to building the PM research engine lathe. I needed to cut a 4" long keyway in a .187" OD shaft 4" long. I think Marv used a slitting saw and Chili used a tiny 1/32" end mill to cut this keyway on their model PM lathes. Well I...

    Hand Sharpening?

Just an FYI- Good ol' Enco now carries decent CCGT inserts that'll fit the Glanze tools. They are not real cheap and they are a little delicate. But they work so well I tend to use them all the time on aluminum, bronze and leaded steel...

    Your Home Lathe Tooling

Bob, I am sure it could be done. A few issues might be a serious problem though. The spindle surfaces were never intended to be run in a plain bearing. I know my 9x20 spindle was not even hardened. I figure you are really pushing it at 2000rpm in a plain bearing with no pressure fed lubrication...

    Your Home Lathe Tooling

Chuck, you might get some interest out of how I line bored my 9A and made my own bronze bearing shells- http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=26578 Yes I agree, .2" DOC are well within the limits of this machine. Not to take anything away from my old 9x20 and it even had a 1hp 3ph...

    Your Home Lathe Tooling

I no longer have the 9x20 and a rebuilt 1960's 9A South Bend is my main lathe now. Carbide is used 90% of the time on it. I use a 7rib serpentine belt flat side against the pulleys to replace the leather belt and it has a Leeson industrial 3/4hp DC motor and variable speed drive. Belt slip is...

    Your Home Lathe Tooling

Well this is a pic of my old 9x20 taking at least a .125" cut in some 6061 using a Glanze ccmt insert tool under power feed. That was the norm for me on that lathe when roughing larger stock. .1" in leaded steel. Steve
