Reducing Mini-Mill Column Flex (and Column Y-Axis Alignment)

I see drawbar runout too, but it has nothing to do with the chuck/spindle. That's the "business side" of the mill. LMS High Torque

Are cheap drill bits worth it?

Flat out, NO! I bought a set of Harbor Freight drills and had to re-grind 8 out of the set because they were sharpened wrong by hitting only on one side. I guess they would be OK if I wasn't doing precision work and used them for common contractor work. Spend some money and get some quality bits.

Project of the Month of June.

I followed this build closely and with bated breath. It really turned out great looking and sounds good. Thanks for your hard work and effort to document it so well. Maybe someday when I retire I'll attempt such a build.

How do you cut small threads?

I recently had to cut a double ended M5 thread stud in brass. I sized the stud and then cut the threads with a die in a tail stock die holder. I made it long on both ends and then finished it to size on my belt sander.

    Vacuum forming press ?

I built a vacuum box once for a hair brain idea I had to make custom license plates for people. Custom plates were the big thing in the 70-80s and I figured you could put names and sayings on them that the DMV wouldn't let you do. I also figured I could also sell license plate frames to put them...

    What I do.

Welcome to the site. You seem to have some mechanical ability and tenacity to get it done. Here's the "Hillbilly Blood" method with a minimum amount of tools. It may or may not work depending on your ability and the tools at hand. You can replace the valve guide with a few basic tool and...

    What I do.

Welcome to the site. You seem to have some mechanical ability and tenacity to get it done. Here's the old "Hillbilly Blood" type method with a minimum amount of tools. I may or may not work depending on your ability and the tools at hand. You can replace the valve guide with a few basic tool...

Reducing Mini-Mill Column Flex (and Column Y-Axis Alignment)

I guess I forgot to post my pics as promised. If you read my plan above, I deviated from it in the fact that I decided it didn't need the angle brkts on top of the base and bolted to the sides of the column. Simply overkill. I also left the holes a little bit oversize in the lower base brkt...

Project of the month of May 2014

Congrats and well done! I love this engine and I would like to make one someday when I get more time. woohoo1

    Turning an MT2 internal taper

Brian It sounds like you figured it out, but in the future you may want to go LMS website and find the chart they have for all of the Morse Taper specs. Nice thing to add to your files. Rick

    Machining a flywheel

You can find "close" center of any disk, bar or square stock using the crisscross/90* line method. Drill a hole smaller than the final plans call for. Then run a bolt through and tap into an appropriate size bar stock (depending on the weight of the piece) using the same method. Chuck the bar...

Reducing Mini-Mill Column Flex (and Column Y-Axis Alignment)

I have an LMS High Torque Mini Mill and have experienced some chatter when doing some heavy slot milling in steel, restricting my cuts to no more than .020" per pass. I've researched all of the threads on this subject (ad infinitum!) and have settled on using a piece of 4" wide steel channel...

My Build of Stew's Overcrank Engine

Wow! That's a great engine with all of the detail and moving parts, I've never seen one like that before. You did a super job building it and you are truly a great craftsman! :bow

My take on 4 X 6 band saw modifications

Great mods Al. I'll have to steal a few of those. I have a HF horizontal, basically the same thing. With no room to keep it permanently set up, I mounted mine onto a two-wheeler for a smaller footprint and mobility. I lost the upright saw feature but it's a space saver for now. Someday I'll...

    First Engine - Elmer's #15 Fancy

I finished the engine up with a little wooden base that I turned out of some leftover Teak I had lying around. Here's the first run test on the shop compressor. I later found a small needle valve to better regulate air pressure and I still would like to get a low pressure gauge (0-30 psi?)...

    First Engine - Elmer's #15 Fancy

Here are some pics of my completed "first engine". I didn't have the proper set screw for the flywheel yesterday afternoon so I haven't run it yet, but I'll post a video once I do. This project was a bit challenging for me because of the size of the parts. My machining experience has primarily...

    Joe Martin Miniature Museum

I went to the Antique Steam Engine Museum and Auction this weekend in Vista, CA. They didn't run anything this weekend as it was really more about the auction. I got a swing'n deal on a Formdom hanging die grinder set with foot pedal control and about 100 dental tool and a dozen porting tool...

Spark Plug threads in Aluminium heads

I've worked extensively on motorcycles (dirt and street), and for many years on Chrysler Hemi Top Fuel engines. When I made repairs I used Timeserts. Generally, the std aluminum threads last forever unless someone cross threads the hole. Or, in the event of TF, a rod breaks going through the...

    V-Twin

I originally posted in the wrong forum from my phone, so I will try again here. Does anyone know if any plans are available for a "Harley-style" V-Twin, maybe something like the one(s) on the home page. I really like that open crankcase design for simplicity and visual appeal.
