Mini lathe -- new cross and compound

Ooops. I screwed up on that. I meant to say that i was looking at Class 40 (not 400). When i went to check prices to order i noticed my error. This looks like a cheap enough project for the iron. I will have to get a couple of tool bits, but one can never have enough of those cutting tools...

Mini lathe -- new cross and compound

Thanks for the links. I think i'll have a go at it. I have a couple engines that need to be finished first, as well as other things honey-doos.

Mini lathe -- new cross and compound

I would like it to perform better. Simpler angle adjustment and more ridged, longer travel. I also would like to have the T slot mounting for the tool post. Again though, this is a "use the machine" type project, not really intending on rebuilding the "wheel."

Mini lathe -- new cross and compound

I've been thinking of making a new cross slide and compound for the minilathe. Modeled more or less after a southbend. The question i have is what material should i be using? I was thinking for ease i would use a chunk of cast400 from speedy. Then i thought it might be to soft, but i have a...

    Show your neat stuff

I've been meaning to snap a picture of my "neatest" treasure and here it is. It was my Uncles, a wooden bit index made by Morse Drill & Machine Company. The bits my Uncle (a tool and die maker of yesteryear) are still sharp and cut fine!

    Feeling a little foolish

Well Chuck, let me add my little foolishness. Last night, while turning a new cylinder for an air motor, I cut a bar of aluminum with a short taper on one end. I could have cut it off in the band saw, as i just cut it. Or i could have faced the other now FLAT end as the other end didn't matter...

    Why didn't I know this?

Ken's right. Metric screws with "close" imperial markings. Not paying enough attention to this has scrapped more parts than i want to admit to. :o

    Terrible Day At Work!

Hard working men for sure! Anyone make out the date that appears while the man is testing the ceiling rock before blasting? It's at 3.27 and i think it says 6-2-29?
