    My First Stirling:LSE-01

Hello everyone! This will be my attempt at a stirling engine. Ive been making a few wobblers here and there, and I have the confidence (along with a QCTP!) now to make one. The engine I will be building is this one: http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~khirata/english/mk_l01.htm Plans...

    My First Stirling Engine

For the past few months Ive been building some wobblers here and there, different variations and such. Now I would like to step it up and go with something more complex, a stirling engine. The one I am going to build is this one: http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~khirata/english/mk_l01.htm The plans...

    My HMEM EZ Engine

Hi everyone! I didnt realize how close I was to finishing this, I had started a worklog, but Im *really* bad at keeping them. Ive also been busy planning another project, non model related (hint: Its a home energy monitor) This engine can be "cleaned" up a little bit, but for some reason or...

    My Modified HMEM EZ Engine

Hello All! Ive been meaning to post this for quite some time, but moving stuff tends to..make everything messy. Ive been getting my work area all together, and I think I can finally (re)start on this project. It is my second engine, and Ive contemplated dropping this one to start a whole...

    Old Drill Press

So following my other thread, I found a used Drill Press. I dont have pictures now because Im in the process of building a bench for it. But my question is, How do I clean it up? It has all Black goop and caked oil on it. Can I use WD-40 or Kerosene?

    Open Source Machining

Came across this site while looking for something else. A quick look around yields some excellent (old) documents and some youtube videos How To: http://opensourcemachinetools.org/how-to-documentsarticles/ Operating a lathe video...

    Harbor Freight 8'' Drill Press

Harbor Freight has their 8'' 5 speed drill press on sale for 64.99. Is it complete crap or "OK once you get it running (like the mini lathes)"?. I dont mind if I have to disassemble it, I just want to know what others think :) I have read that the quills (or the chucks) arent fitted correctly...

Ray Hasbrouck #4 Cylinder and Piston

The plans for the engine call for the Valve to be made out of steel and the Valve Body out of Brass. The plans also call for the main Cylinder to be made out of steel, and the main piston to be made out of 2024 Aluminum. From what Ive read I shouldnt use Aluminum on steel for any of these parts...

Making the HMEM "EZ" Engine Double Acting

I realize that the HMEM EZ engine was made to be as easy as possible to make, But recently double acting engines have caught my interest. I was wondering if its possible to make the engine double acting and how to do it. I have a vague idea as to how, but the physics in my head dont necessarily...

    New Lathe or Mill?

My House "project" is nearly ending, as is the year (Lets be honest here, if you own a house "it" never ends anyway),so Im left with extra funds, Around $1300 is probably what Id like to spend. I currently own a Microlux 7x16 lathe. Its pretty good, had to tweak it a little here and there...

Off Setting Stock in a 4 Jaw Chuck

I decided to practice using my new 4 Jaw chuck. I can find guides everywhere on the net as to how to center stock, But how exactly do I offset stock by a certain Amount? Example: I have 0.750 Square Stock, and need to drill a hole thats 0.56 from one side, but centred in the middle of the...

    Next Engine?

Ive completed my first wobbler. I plan on making more, including some from "Making simple model steam engines", so After I make a few more wobblers, which steam engine should I go for next? I want to make something with a simple valve, where the piston is held still (ie doesnt wobble). I like to...

    Wobbler Improvements (Or General Improvements)

Ive nearly completed my first wobbler, and its got me thinking as to how to improve it. Ive come up with a list and want some thoughts on it. 1) Slim Down Cylinder (Trim a bit from the sides not being used) 2) Slim Down the Piston (ie, make it hallow but fitting into the cylinder.) 3) Slim...

Jessica, aka My First Steam Engine

After much consideration, Ive decided to build my first steam engine instead of a stirling engine, based on the Advice of Others. The Name Jessica comes from the person who this will be given to for Christmas. I will be building a wobbler type steam engine I also bought a book to help me in my...

    Stirling Engine Displacer Materials

Short and simple. Can I use Aluminum for the Displacer And the Displacer Cylinder in a Stirling Engine? Or do I have to use a Aluminum Displacer and Stainless Steel? I know the ideal material is graphite..But thats expensive as well! The reason I ask is because Stainless steel is expensive and...

    Engineer Reporting in!

Hello There! Ive become very interested in machining engines ever since I got my mini lathe (Micromark 7x16 Lathe). The lathe is pretty much stock. I just bought a 4 jaw chuck and I LOVE it. The only thing I have done to my lathe is just lap it (the cross slide was all over the place!). A...
