    die holder question

My purchased die stocks look to be about 15 degrees apart. My homebuilt one for my lathe only has one but I have thought about adding two more at 120 degrees apart. Not really sure if the angle matters unless you are using adjustable dies. Just my two cents.

Blondihacks starting a new engine build series

So Quin Dunki is starting an engine build series on her Blondihacks YouTube channel. She is building a PM Research no 4. Big engine on small equipment. She started with a line boring setup for the engine stand on her Precision Matthews lathe, which I believe is a 10x22. I learned a lot...

    Bronze questions

I had seen the 'red brass' designation for US, but that is as vague as 'gunmetal'. I did read of a designation for 'admirality brass' which is denoted as 'bronze G' but I only found that listed on one supplier and the cost was too rich for my blood. The sae93200 gives me what I was looking for...

    Bronze questions

Ii have two questions I am hoping someone can answer. 1. What is the US equivalent to 'Gunmetal'? What alloy designation? 2. What bronze alloy is appropriate to use for boiler bushings? A lot of the model engineer Youtubers just call it gunmetal or bronze and never tell you what the alloy...

Are there 'Standard' thread sizes for model engines?

This has turned into quite the educational discussion. Lots of good advice and supporting information. Thank you. It looks like I will be investing in some taps and dies over the next few years. I will probably start with imperial first. The pick up the others as needed later. Should I buy...

Are there 'Standard' thread sizes for model engines?

I forgot there is a unf. I have seen 5-40 mentioned but it seems to be a bit harder to find the taps and dies. I like the idea of staying in imperial. I am very familiar with it so I can identify it quicker. And the metric stuff on my 3d printers drives me nuts. I never have the correct length...

Are there 'Standard' thread sizes for model engines?

I am sure that this question gets asked repeatedly, but I am asking again. I am about to embark on my first small steam engine build from a set of castings i got on ebay. The 'Little Oscillator' found here: Steam Engine Price List | Precision Service I know that plans usually list out the...

    What materials to stock?

@SmithDoor Do you use the A36 for machining projects? I haven't tried it yet and have read that it is poor machining material. Machine shops and scrapyards are few and far between around here. I pretty much order materials on fleabay or from online.
