    Diesel "thumper"

After much thought and great inspiration from some of the magnificently realised design concepts portrayed so openly in this forum I spent a few days mulling things over and sketched out a few preliminary designs..... Tonight however, my dear wife drew my attention to a very reasonably priced...

    Linotype machine Repair

Having spent much of my childhood in and around the compositing rooms of The Times, Sunday Times and Guardian, I will never miss the overpowering and oppressive levels of opression and urgency that filled every nook and cranny, infiltrated every cell of my anatomy and drove many who spent their...

    Elmer's Pumping Engine

The old adage "a picture says a thousand words" is well demonstrated by your excellent use of macro photos and lighting.

Anybody guess what this is going to be???

As a bit of a lazy so and so when it comes to electrickery, I like the Zener diode system as used in Triumph and other motorcycles... An infinite supply of wiring diagrams and ideas that work efficiently are always available on the custom and classic motorcycle forums.

    round column mill drill

In my experience, the importers of Chinese machine tools often have to repair or "fettle" a fair proportion either before they are dispatched to the buyer, or when they are returned if they don't work... Hence the appalling reputation they often have, which if you consider the price is grossly...

Is CNC the solution for me?

An ha!.... The mist clears... Being disabled myself (although less severely than you) I misunderstood your needs Ryan. I wonder whether one of the newer (and now much cheaper) 3D prototyping printers and something like a 40W laser printer/cutter/plotter setup might be a good way to start...

Rust prevention with Lanolin - It's better then oil

I might agree if wife and mother-in-law were genetically related to my niece ;)

Is CNC the solution for me?

I agree with Tin Falcon. I think you'd be missing out on a huge amount of first hand knowledge and useful experience if you don't take the time to understand just how much you can do with even very basic equipment.... Plus..... Every good CNC machinist I've ever known was a good manual...

    Repairing cast iron casting.

I As John Rus suggests, "muggyweld" and many other low temperature, alloy/cast, solder compounds are surprisingly good for repairing broken castings in non-critical applications. There are also some excellent engineering glues and fillers which are very good and can also be machined if required.

Rust prevention with Lanolin - It's better then oil

To be fair, the only reason I know of lanolin reactions is because my wife, niece and mother-in-law all suffered from unpredictable bouts of itching (nothing serious though) that we all supposed were due to washing powder or something similar, but after a year, or so we realised that it always...

    Presto-Lite torch rebuild

On any equipment designed for dry seals I would NEVER risk using any product for that purpose... If your o-rings don't seal when dry, you really want to know why...

    Bottle engine

Respect to anyone who casts their own larger parts.... Having seen enough failed castings to last me out, the last thing I'd want to do is try something that even the pros don't always get right...

Best valve design given that it is to be made of wood?

Having used wood for many engineering applications I would recommend machining your valves and other bearing/friction surfaces well oversize and then charring them in a fire so that after finishing the fire-hardened surface is still thick enough to do the job... I would use maple personally as...

    Camshaft lobe timing

I hope that you wont take this comment as any sort of personal attack, or insult, as that is certainly not my intention and I can understand to an extent what you're trying to do because I too have been that way inclined (even if it was 30 years ago) It's important to push boundaries and...

    Repairing cast iron casting.

I've welded thousands of cast machine tool parts using MMA electrodes specially formulated for malleable cast iron and while it does require a little more care than mild steel, the result is extremely strong and the strength of the surrounding material suffers very little compared to some...

Rust prevention with Lanolin - It's better then oil

While Lanolin's water repellent properties have been well known for centuries, it's demise as a commonly used substance is in part due to the fact that many people are allergic to it, or have allergies that can be aggravated by it and even after thorough hand cleansing, it's not unusual for...

    Diesel "thumper"

I wasn't deliberately teasing JW.... I do actually have an idea for diesel motorcycle engine that's been floating about in my rather woolly and leaky head for many years and it occasionally tries to escape through the cracks.... To answer Johnny1320... My favourite design tool is my...

    Diesel "thumper"

Yup.. You got it.... This idiot somehow typed diesel instead of petrol???.... Don't ask why, because I hate having to admit that I'm suffering from premature senility....
