    engine dyno using simpledyno!

im working on a dyno project for measuring HP of 1/5 scale rc engine(23 through 31cc, about 3 to 5 HP). found this handy computer program that uses audio input signal to read RPM. you put a magnet somewhere on a rotating part and put a coil next to the magnet (you can even just use an earbud...

    compound block for mini lathe.

here is a block i made that bolts in place of the compound rest. it greatly improves the rigidity of the lathe. i made it exactly the same thickness as the compound so i can switch them out and still have my tools on center...

    handy little gadget.

here is a little thing that is used for machining the end of a screw. i don't have every length screw needed so i cut down longer ones. the problem is they are hard to grip. i used to thread them into a nut and spin it in reverse with an upside down tool. now i use this little thing. just drill...

    hitorque lathe high torque!

hi guys. a few months back i posted a thread asking about making a speed reducer for my mini lathe. some guys recommended using poly-v/ micro-v belts, so i ordered some up and got them a while ago. i also bought some material and have made a part once in a while and have finally got something...

    cad on mac osx

i have a mac(macbook pro) osx and have started playing around with some cad for designing my projects. i dont have cnc, but it is nice to have a part designed and planned to make sure everything fits. so far i have found that P&PAD is the best (paper and pencil aided design). or AncientCAD...

    "ltd" stirling.

here is my little stirling i made. runs, although it is more of a high temp differential engine. for some reason it likes to run hot. if i have it really cold on one side, and hot on the other, it will try to run, but wont keep going. if it is hot one one side, and really hot on the other, it...

one of my favorite homemade tools.

just wanted to show you guys a tool i made a while back. its a "portable" soldering iron. had an old piece of copper from one of those electrolysis copper dissolvers that go in a pool. i turned all the old corroded parts off and made this. it will solder several small wires before needing to be...

    ultimate mini mill power feed.

this is a power feed i have been building. it uses a motor and gearbox from a dewalt drill. the gearbox has 3 speeds and metal gears. i had to make shifters to replace the shift drum that was on the drill. it has a clutch do engage and disengage the lead screw. i have a motor controller and...

making extra QCTP holders for a2z cnc system.

i have a mini lathe 7x12 and have the a2z cnc QCTP. i bought a 3/4 inch dovetail cutter from littlemachineshop and started making some extra tool holders, since the spares that a2z sell are almost 20 bucks a piece. i made a knurling tool holder, and some general purpose square tool holders...

a note to mini lathe users (7x10,12,14,16)

just wanted to show you mini lathe people a trick for gaining a bit of room to work between the tailstock and chuck. the generic 1/2 inch tailstock drill chuck found on most mini lathes is rather giant and takes up a ton of space. i made an arbor to mount a 3/8 capacity jacobs chuck (off an old...

    my lathe needs more torque.

i have the 7x12 mini lathe equipped with the brushless dc motor and belt drive. it would be nice to get some more torque, and less rpm. i have never turned up the dial much past half way. has anyone replaced the pulleys with a different ratio? right now it looks to be something around 2:1 or 3:1...

the machines i use at work.

just a little thread about what i use at my summer job. i have a 7x12 and a mini mill at home, but at work i get to operate a 1979 20hp ponar wroklaw lathe which is super fun. there is also a "sharp" brand mill that looks like a bridgeport clone. what kind of crazy things do you guys use...

where to get small mechanical components?

where are some good online sources of miniature things like gears or pulleys/belts (stuff that is difficult to machine your self)? mcmaster carr seems to have mostly larger industrial components. i dont really need anything in particular, but want to see whats out there for future projects and...

here is the beginning of a taper attachment for my mini lathe. i have the guide bar and the plate it sits on done. i still need to build the mounting arms that will clamp to the lathe bed and the carriage that rides on the guide bar.
