    Lathe parts needed after accident.

You can also TIG weld the casting with a nickel rod. I just did this on an old well pump casing. It works well and it finishes well with grinding and polishing

For Sale Ford’s First Engine Parts

Several years ago a friend and I were going to build a few models of Ford’s first engine. I started to gather materials and made just a few parts. I also purchased the plans from a well known maker. My friend unexpectedly passed away and I lost interest. I have the following parts that I...

    Otto Engine Works Rings

Has anyone contacted Otto Engine Works lately? I want to order some rings, but got no reply to my email. No one answered the phone when I called. This may be a side business and they answer when they are free.

    piston ring size

Piston ring making is much more complex than I imagined. I found a site (Otto Engine Works) that seems to stock piston rings. Hopefully they have rings to match the cylinder /piston combination that I am going to use. Using an o-ring instead of a piston ring is also an option. Thank you for...

    For sale?

Just a quick note about a fellow who shows up on various boards with items that are sometimes hard to find or the price is very good. He frequents gunsmith boards, knife making and collecting boards, and now I believe he is frequenting other boards. He lurks a while until he gets an idea of what...

    piston ring size

I am in the process of building a copy of the Henry Ford engine. I decided to try to use as much scrap steel that I have laying around the shop. I have seamless tubing that is a little larger than the plans called for, so I really cant use the piston rings that were included with the plans. I...

    milling vise

I acquired a Bridgeport a few years ago and the 6" Bridgeport vise that came with it was mounted to an aftermarket swivel base. The base has a centering post and the vise was attached using t-nuts. Worked great, but raises the vise quite a bit. The swivel base was probably a flea market find...

Fantastic workmanship. I don't think my eyes are good enough for this precision work!

    Best lathe question

I have been through quite a few lathes. Started way back in the 70's with a small Craftsman/Atlas. Later I picked up a 13 x 48 Sheldon that was made in the 40's. It was a little shop worn, but I learned to work around the wear. A few years ago I lucked into a free Enco 14 x 40 which is a brute...

    Scaling up?

Being a total amateur, these are the things that I need to know before I start. I can make things on my lathe and mill, but never made an engine (except for a wobble steam) before.

    Scaling up?

I know most guys try to make engines smaller and smaller. I am waiting on plans for the Ford 1893 engine. It seems that I have most of the material to make one in the shop, but everything, including the flywheel is a bit larger than called for. The flywheel is close to twenty pounds. Has...

    Jus' dreamin'

The manson lathes are quite 'cute'. It is a copy (just in looks) of the Monarch 10EE. I think that I would buy a larger lathe that you could actually buils something on. There are some casting kits out there that can be made into a small "shelf' lathe. The Manson is a great lathe as...

    My 'cozy" shop.

My wife never seemed to mind me buying equipment. She even asked me to teach her how to use the lathe. She is very protective about "her" half of the garage though! My shop was well layed out when I started with an imaginary line drawn in the sand. After bumping into the machines for several...

    radius cutter plans wanted

Not quite plans, but I just purchased a MLA-13 casting kit to build a combination radius cutter and boring bar from "Metal Lathe". It will be quite a project for me, as I never worked with cast iron rough castings before. Most of it is lathe work and the instructions/drawings are very nicely...

Very nice building. How thick did you pour the pad?

    My 'cozy" shop.

My shop is very compact. You can use the lathe or the milling machine in one move. If you have a buddy working with you on anything, things get a little tight. The Sheldon lathe in the picture was replaced with the Colchester Triumph.
