18 Pounder QF Mk 1 Cannon model 1:8 scale

Truly a beautiful cannon. I could only imagine the work, expense, the endless hours, the skill, needed to fabricate this interesting hunk of metal....and I could also imagine the pride and joy that results from your efforts. Thanks for the pictures.

    Diesel Aero Engine

Just a suggestion: Plenty of model, compression-ignition engines to choose from. Check out the "MLA Diesel Engine"....a design that can be made from bar-stock. Many have made this engine, over the years. Mess up a part, just re-machine it from scrap. No castings, no jigs, no fixtures...

Deep Hole Drilling / Cannon Barrel

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas for alternative solutions. Swifty....never thought of that....making a very long spade bit. Thanks. Using my Silver & Deming drill bit mounted into a long extension seems like a viable option. Once a portion of the 17" deep pilot hole is...

Deep Hole Drilling / Cannon Barrel

Dale, Thanks for the suggestions. My first cannon barrel was step drilled, and the final hole was generated using a .750" X 18" OAL drill bit. I was actually astounded that I was able to drill such a deep hole, so easily into steel. So with my success, came the idea to go bigger, and...

Deep Hole Drilling / Cannon Barrel

My problem: I need to drill a blind hole 1.250" diameter, about 19 inches deep into a piece of round bar stock, 3.00 inches in diameter. I have a .750" drill bit 18 inches OAL. This will give me a pilot hole approximately 17.500 inches long. I could open the pilot hole with larger diameter...

    Laser cut steam engine

Nice to see this modern, computer-age alternative to all those rough, casting kits of the past. Steam, gas, hot-air, compressed-air engines, that could be more easily assembled from laser-cut plate, bar-stock, and some fasteners....would be a very good thing. Frank

    Thumb piercings

My worst "stupid" moment....Pumping away, overly fast, with an old-fashioned pump-drill. Just had to drill that 1/16" hole....had to hold the work with my hand! The drill lifted out of the work-piece on the upstroke, and plunged down through my thumb on the down-stroke. Ran around the...

    KNIFE BLADES....Hand-Filing of Bevels

Rail- Thanks for the video and the added information. Generally, in the process of cleaning up, removing surface imperfections, rust, hammer marks, and the profiling of a blade blank on a belt sander, the flat surfaces of the blade are usually ground down to level the steel. The original...

    KNIFE BLADES....Hand-Filing of Bevels

So...here's an update: Since my last postings, I have met a professional knife-maker who lives only 20 minutes away from me. Never knew anything about him until last week. We met, and became instant friends. I have been invited to use his shop equipment, and he will guide me along on my...

First build - Which engine is the best?

TMB... Steam, Gas, Compressed-Air? What kind of engine do you fancy? With your 7-8 years worth of machining experience, you can probably build a decent, bar-stock engine, for starters. The "Downloads" section, posted on this form, shows the drawings for many engines that will fit your needs...

    A farme diesel plans?

Just use the drawings and make the crankcase, and various other parts from bar-stock, flat stock, and weldments. The dimensions, and relationships of the various parts are what's critical. I would think with your experience, and access to machines, it will not be too much of a problem. Good...

    Gearless Mechanism--4 stroke i.c. engine

Ingenious mechanism built by very clever machinists who love to share with other model makers, and hobbyists. I too, share your excitement Brian when I view these mechanisms, levers, bell-cranks, etc, all working their individual magic, in perfect concert, doing what they were designed to do...

    A farme diesel plans?

Hello- You are in luck if you want to make a scale model version of the old Lister vertical, stationary diesel engine (single cylinder). Contact a gent named Eric Hale ([email protected]) also on Facebook "Lister CS 6/1 Model Diesel Engine" He has plans/kits. Plans 30 pounds/free pdfs.... if...

Gearless hit and miss engine of my own design

Hello members... This original thread posted by Alex, shows videos of the gearless, star-ratchet mechanism that Brian Rupnow is using on his vertical engine design. In concept, I believe these two mechanisms are very similar. I enjoyed reading through both threads and builds. Thanks, gents...

    KNIFE BLADES....Hand-Filing of Bevels

Thanks for the interest, comments, and encouragement. Many years ago I had a friend who was a professional knife maker, and I spent many hours helping him produce high-quality knives. Spent too many long hours sitting behind display tables, at knife and gun shows, keeping him company while he...

    KNIFE BLADES....Hand-Filing of Bevels

So...back in March-2013, when I first started this thread, much has changed. Oh, I still want to make some knives, and, hand-file the bevels. "You-Tube" is a wonderful thing. I found all the tutorials that I need regarding the hand-filing of knife bevels, and I will use a simple jig that...

    Gearless Mechanism--4 stroke i.c. engine

Hello Brian- and others.... Very interesting to see and read about this star-ratchet mechanism. The video shows it all, including the spring loaded/adjustable, governing mechanism. Maybe my references to "intirtal governor" was the wrong term to use for this set-up. The Olds Vertical...
