I have a G9972Z. It has been very useable, but like most of these lathes it is also a work in progress.

I mounted the pointed bottom end in a set of v blocks. I bolted a length of flat stock to each end to clamp it down.

Getting close, still a lot of small stuff to make and final assembly.

I used a center. I left the stem 1" long and used a #1 center drill. Trimmed to length. I tried the step method but didn't have much luck.

The conical end can also be used to find the center of round stock, such as locating the center of a shaft to cut a keyway.

Try making a practice crank out of 12L14 leaded steel.

I bought a Grizzly H7527 6" rotary table w/ dividing plates and tailstock (made in India). It required the usual tweaking out of the box but has performed fine since. I used it for parts on my Hodgson 9 cyl. radial engine including all the gears. John

Are you saying the MT is spinning or is the chuck spinning on the JT?

In my opinion the Hodgson radial has not been at all difficult to build so far. Just building nine single cylinders and putting them on a common crankcase. Detailed plans sure help. Time will tell.

I have the book too. Ron includes many photos of his build process. I am currently working on a Hodgson radial. The Offy seems a bit more complex, but I am looking forward to working on it once the radial is done
