    Linotype machine Repair

There is an 1886 "Blower" Linotype in the Smithsonian museum. My late father was responsible for its restoration in the early 1970's when he was a director at M.H.Whittaker & Son in Leeds UK. http://www.nytimes.com/1986/11/27/garden/smithsonian-gets-historic-linotype.html I well remember him...

    Gear formulas question.

Hi Guys I think you are talking about Sunderland cutters when you mention straight hobs. My late father rigged up the Alexander Master Toolmaker milling machine to cut gears by that method. I still have the machine but not used it for cutting gears recently as I also have a conventional Mikron...

Smashing job there Rob. Will you be including the 1/3 scale oil leak between the block and crankcase as per most full size engines ?;D Phil

    My Little workshop

My only comment would be:- Why did you not paint the walls white before you installed everything, it makes it so much lighter if you do that. Phil

    Tool chest materials

My dad told me many years ago that Oak is the best wood for promoting rust in your toolbox, and never to use it for that purpose. Looks like he was right if you read this :- http://www.npl.co.uk/upload/pdf/corrosion_of_metals_by_wood.pdf Phil

    Digital Readout

I have an Alexander Master Toolmaker milling machine, a few years ago I fitted it with a set of three cheap linear scales to give me a sort of poor mans digital readout system. This has worked extremely well and served its purpose, but I am now wondering if I should go the whole hog and fit a...

    Sharpening involute cutter

I grind the backs of the teeth first, using a detent against the cutting face of the tooth, this ensures all teeth are the same thickness. This allows the teeth to be indexed using the detent on the back of the tooth and out of the way of the grinding wheel whilst doing the actual sharpening.

    1/3 Scale Austin Seven Engine

The three bearing crank came a bit later than you suggest, mid 30's. It was not the friction that caused a problem, but the fact that to squeeze the centre bearing in, the designers had to pinch metal from other areas to make space. The centre bearing was a split shell type, once these start to...

    3D CAD and Model Engineering

Another big plus for Solidworks from me. I use it all day everyday in my paid job as a mechanical design engineer. Then I come home and use it regularly at home for my model engineering designs. I have a golden rule to never trust any published design until I have modelled it in Solidworks...

Issue with CAM and or tappet, need help

You look to have a single point contact between the cam face and the ball bearing in the end of the cam follower. This is going to be a very bad point of loading and will probably wear a line in the cam very quickly. My engine has flat faced cam followers with sufficient surface are to ensure...

    1/3 Scale Austin Seven Engine

I will be watching this build with great interest, I have an Austin 7 myself and know all about building and modifying full size engines. I have often thought a model of my own car would be an interesting project some day, but thinking about it is as far as I have got. My car Phil
