    The Spinster

Zee, I have seen posts where you just put the plate against the chuck and bring a live center up to the plate and friction turn it. Should you need more umph you can use double sided tape. What I think happened is that the hole had enough clearance for the bolt so it probably had a small amount...

    Measuring bores

Ned, On the DBG I used we had a rod that was adjusted to an exact length. We then put the assembly in a fixture and dialed the reading to give size (which usually had .001 added as a buffer). From this we got the bore size plus or minus the tenths the bore was in or out. This also showed taper...

    Grinding Wheels

Guys, I just bought an 80 grit wheel to try out. Looks similar to Gunboatguy's at almost half the price: http://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Norton-White-Grinding-Wheel-P38C20.aspx No affiliation other than as a customer. Sean

    Scaled up Cracker

Bob, No rolling chassis until I get gears! With the larger size I need to recalculate the crankshaft and wheelshaft locations. Not a big issue. You guys really got me interested in the large scale stuff. My wife is definitely tired of hearing about it. Talk to you soon, Sean

    Scaled up Cracker

What a weekend! I went to my first steam up on Saturday and had a blast! Learned a lot about steam engines and their operation. Got a tour of an amazing shop from one of the members (7.5 gauge is unbelievable!) and in general learned more in one day than I have in a long time. Thanks to...

    Running DOS on Windows 7?

Rick, I tried every compatibility mode in Vista and could not get any of Marv's programs to work. His programs are the only reason I tried so hard to get DOS running! DosBox was my only solution. Thanks, Sean

    Running DOS on Windows 7?

I know it is not Windows 7 but I have all of Marv's programs running under Vista 32 using DosBox. Needs some setup but not too bad. Hope that helps, Sean

    Never have the right tool........

Tmuir, I had that same problem with a 2-56 die. I turned a piece of drill rod to fit my die holder and tapped it through the center. Then I used a bandsaw and cut through a bit past half way (about .050 past the tapped hole). That gave me a cutting edge. I hardened the die and it has worked...

    Scaled up Cracker

Arnold, Thanks. I will try to make the spring light enough to reduce friction and strong enough to seal. Your build was also one that inspired. Thank you for that. Sean

    Scaled up Cracker

Bob, On dissimilar metals you are correct as far as I know. Brass seems to be exempt from that as I have seen many smaller engines built with brass pistons and cylinders. I don't know how well it will work on steam though. See you tomorrow, Sean

    Scaled up Cracker

Bob, Thanks for that. I am going to build the cylinder and port face of brass but the piston out of stainless. My understanding is that brass on brass is ok? ??? If not I can always make it steel. Of that I have plenty! Anyone need any AR plate? :big: :big: :big: :big: :big: Sean
