    Aluminium casting problem.

I have a problem with aluminium casting that I cannot figure out why it is doing it? I made a video with closeups showing that defect.

    Recasting a broken casting.

I tried to straighten a casting for my electric saw and it broke. So I cast another part and made a video about it. At the moment it is summer where I live and my green sand tends to dry out before the mold has been completed so I added lots of water to make up another mold. It was way too much...

Backyard centrifugal iron casting (cylinder liners)

I have always wanted to try centrifugal iron casting but I am very wary of pouring hot iron into a spinning mold. So I came across this video about making parts for a model engine using this process. The one mistake he made was to pour iron onto the steel plate at the end of the mold which will...

Melting steel with a backyard furnace.

I watched this video about him trying to melt steel, no surprise that it failed. A long time ago I tried the same experiment and failed so let me give the reasons why it failed. Steel at room temperature is very unreactive but when steel is heated to close to the melting point it becomes very...

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

I made a video to show an alternate way of hardening a sodium silicate core using a microwave oven instead of passing carbon dioxide through the core. If you use this this method 1-2 minutes seems enough to harden a small core, if a larger core or mold is going to be hardened you may have to...

Video showing how a mold for a lathe bed is made.

I think that everyone here would own a lathe so it could be interesting to see how they are made. This video also shows the rough machining of the lathe bed.

    Expendable face plate.

Hi everyone, I machined my face plate iron casting. I find them very useful when machining certain model engine castings.

How I store waste oil for my burner.

I made a video showing how my waste oil is stored and how I use a compressor to force the waste oil to my burner. The advantage with this idea is the compressor is not running all the time. Most times I use 100kpa to 200kpa pressure.

    Don't be like this guy!

It always amazes me that people operating a furnace at home see no need to wear protective clothing, watch from 5.00 mark.

    Melting aluminium sheet metal comparison.

So what I found out making this video that different sheet metals can give widely different recovery rates and some machine really well to very poor machining without cutting fluid.

    Oil burner build.

I came across this video of an Aussie Machinist/metal caster which shows him building an oil burner, he is up to part 4 and in this video he lights up the oil burner for the first time on camera. This is where inexperience can make lighting an oil burner so difficult. Have a look at the 30:00...

    Adding sulfur to cast iron.

In a previous post I touched on adding sulfur to, molten cast iron. It seems that some people did not believe me so here is a link to a paper showing the need to add sulfur when the level is lower than 0.05%. There is a lot of reading so go to section one introduction and scroll to the last...

    Beginner to melting iron.

One of my viewers made a comment on my channel that because of me he is hooked on pouring cast iron. It is great to see someone else having a go at melting cast iron. He is pouring house numbers in cast iron and they come out great for someone new to melting cast iron. He uses green sand with a...

    Precombustion chambers.

On one of my videos someone had built a oil burner and tried to melt cast iron and failed. He gave the link to a video which showed a oil burner build which he had copied. This is the type that has a precombustion chamber and is popular on youtube. When used properly it should melt cast iron...

What iron foundries add to cast iron.

Years ago I went to the preview day for a huge auction of a foundry that made auto parts in Australia. They also made ductile iron crankshafts so have a close look at the 2:27 mark and see the list of additives. Also in the video it shows the patterns for parts of a car, it is something that is...

    Filtering molten cast iron.

Here is a subject that is never covered on youtube, using filters with molten metal. In my video I used a filter with cast iron but these filters can be used with any metal such as brass which can be a dirty metal to pour.

Using water to simulate molten cast iron.

I poured water in a glass to see how much turbulance there is compared to doing the same thing with molten cast iron and as it turned out can give a different result.

    Latest iron melt.

I have made a video of my latest iron pour and go into some detail about what metals in the iron group not to use. Steel can be mistakenly added to a iron melt and will raise the melting point depending on how much has been added. Ductile iron can be used but if you are a beginner it would be...

    Simple crankshaft bearing.

I think most model engine builders start with a oscillating single cylinder engine because it is so simple to build, only three moving parts. I then had the burning desire to build a multi cylinder engine and settled on a three cylinder radial oscillating engine. I started to look at ways to...

    Compressed air propane burner.

Propane burners where I live in Australia can be very expensive so I decided to make a simple one out of recycled stuff I had in my junk bin.
