What to cut plate steel with

The project I am going to be working on has 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" plate steel that I need to layout drill holes and cut to shape. What do I use to cut out the plate steel shape? Can I use my jigsaw with bi metal blades or do I need a metal cut off saw? How do you cut steel parts?

Mini Lathe Tool Lifting, Should I Remove the Compound Rest?

This seems like a silly question as I am pretty new but if the tool is lifting would that imply you may be going the wrong way on the spindle? Maybe I don't understand what you mean by lifting.

Any tips for creating an arbor?

Yes it was a 2MT taper not a 3MT as I had thought at the original post.

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

So I decided to forget about the measurements and chuck up a one inch piece of bar stock eight inches long and turn it and face it. What I found was that I have a .0005 difference or in diameter and about the same on the facing so I am happy with that. Prior to disassembling the entire...

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I created the Arbor for my Jacobs 3/8" chuck and it turned out great. I used a piece of 1018 steel and set the compound as close as I could and made some cuts. Then placed blue sharpie marker all over the piece and slide into the tail stock adjusted the compound attached my new compound tool...

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

I am planning on making some cuts today and will post results.

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

Now I wonder after the prior post if lapping the two surfaces to each other made the machine worse and like mentioned in the prior post now I have a smooth operating cross feed and compound feed but they are no longer square through out the travel of the feeds. Does one need to use a surface...

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

This is actually a lapping operation described here for fit of two pieces and like you say does not result in a truly flat surface but it is a lapping operation by definition. Lapping is a machining operation, in which two surfaces are rubbed together with an abrasive between them, by hand...

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

I might just go ahead and make a brass gib and give it a shot and see what the difference is. I need to find a reason to try out my mini mill anyhow.

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

Just another thought I had while I worked on this project... As I asked questions in my various threads I posted I learned a great deal about the importance of things being tight.... With that said I put a dial indicator on my tip of my hss bit and started wiggling and wow lots of movement all...

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I lapped the slides today and created a post with pictures about it in the Finished projects section. This made a 110% difference in the performance of the slides and the gibs can be adjusted so that the travel is smooth during the entire length of travel with no unwanted movement in the...

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

I decided that I did not want any of the lapping compound on anything other than what I was lapping and wanted to keep the mess and cleanup to a minimum. In this picture I first put down a shop rag folded several times and then used two wood screws to hold down the compound slide to my...

Lapping the compound on my mini lathe

If you have not lapped your cross slide or compound slide I 110% recommend that you do this. It is easy takes a few hours and makes a night and day difference in the performance. Prior to performing the lapping job my slides would not move smoothly and had a jerky action during various parts...

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I bought a new gib as Tin suggested with new set screws a new compound slide screw. Now I am off to read about how to lap in the slide and new gib when I get it.

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I found out something pretty interesting this evening..... For the mini mill I need a short arbor without a tang so it I will be able to use the compound method otherwise Tin is correct the mini mill cross slide would never make it. I measured the diameter of the tailstock with plug gauges...

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I plan on using the compound rest method just have to figure out what angle to set the cross slide at. I am sure there is a formula somewhere for that. Thanks for the link to the site. If I happen to fail at making this I will buy a blank and turn that down and thread it. Ether way it...

Any tips for creating an arbor?

I am going to build one for the tailstock and I think it is 3MT but have to measure to confirm. The book says that is the size.
