    D-Bits

Hadn't seen those before, thanks. Any notes on making them ?

    D-Bits

Very under-rated tool the D-bit... This is one I made with a pilot and a depth stop. It's what is called in the gunsmithing trade a 'chamber reamer' - for making the recess in the breech end of the barrel where the cartridge goes. It's for the little .22 rimfire long rifle.

If, like me, you are interested in the technology of classic racing engines you might really enjoy this link. http://www.lucasinjection.com/ Lots of fascinating info there if you dig around a little.

Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

Sounds like one of the Delta Blues singers I like to listen to in the workshop ;D

Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

John - I should take a moment to thank you for the plans and write up on that steam engine. I downloaded those a month or two ago from somewhere or other ( I'm assuming you are the same Bogstandard ) While my level of interest in steam engines is roughly zero ( which is why I can't even...

Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

I think you are being a teeny bit unfair Mr Bogs. I constantly see amateur machinists on the net doing some really clever and resourceful stuff. One thing that does worry and puzzle me is the lack of emphasis on benchwork, todays solution to every task seems to involve a machine when sometimes...

Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

I thought I knew most old school engineering dodges thanks to my mentor, an incredibly foul mouthed and disreputable ( but heart of gold ) machinist who learnt his trade in the 1960's He never told me about that one though, and it seems right up his street as well :D

    Motorcycle engine ideas

Jeff, Justin, thanks. $16 plus shipping seems very good for the plans, especially considering the extra content in the magazine. Kittiwake doesn't look too bad to me apart from the crankcase. Maybe I should think about learning to make castings. I'm going to build a furnace to smelt my own...

    Hola from Spain

Hi Bill, I've had a run of bad luck with the blades recently and cracked the last few I made during heat treating. Weeks of effort down the drain, but it's something you have to accept. Bladesmithing is very different to machining and as someone who has done little else other than machining as...

    Hello from Spain

My wife learnt Spanish at college, so she teaches me :) If you do have problems finding correct engineering words in English ( online dictionaries are quite bad at this in my experience ) then I have a Spanish\English technical dictionary. Just PM me if you need to know anything.

    Motorcycle engine ideas

That looks VERY promising. I probably once actually had those plans in an issue of ME - a retiring model engineer friend gave me about 3 decades worth of copies. I'm afraid to say I binned them in the end though, as the mostly steam loco content wasn't my thing at all and the missis was...

    Hello from Spain

OK Don, understood ;) Basically I told Henry\Enrique where I lived and commented that machine tools here in Spain are very expensive compared to the UK, then I hoped he could understand my bad Spanish... I definitely won't make a habit of posting in Spanish anyway, it will give all the real...

    Motorcycle engine ideas

The only drawings I have been able to find of any classic bike engines are the cutaways published by The Motorycle. Fantastic pieces of artwork, but not enough there to make engineering drawings from. Not enough for me anyway ;) The Hoglet is perfect except for being a V-Twin - I've been...

    Motorcycle engine ideas

I'd like to make a model single cylinder motorcycle engine and I'm going to need help ;D Here is my wishlist :- 1) The engine must look 'classic' - 60's or earlier 2) It must be a 4 stroke, air cooled. Side or OHV 3) It doesn't have to be a replica of any particular engine, just give the feel...

    Hello from Spain
