Spool. That is the nut the stem screws into. it will slide to align itself. I need the models to slide like that, and be able to rock for the arch motion.

    Need to pick some brains.

Lately Dad and I have been talking about making a piston valve (Of the baker design of vaportight baker valves and piston rings circa 1905) for our half scale 65 horse case traction engine. I do not have the full size valve on our big engine to mesure. But, i do have the one out of our 20 horse...

    3/4" scale Pennsylvania switcher castings

After looking at all my projects I have decided to let a few go. I bought these castings new last year I believe. I never did anything with them but take them out of the box. Cast iron drivers and bronze cylinders. Email me for pics. Asking $215 OBO shipped. These are the castings from...

    Piston Valve Vs Slide Valve

Not always, Alot of piston valves were made for outside admission so you still have the steam chest. Traction engines from the factory were all made for slide valves but companies sold branchhouses kits for piston valves. The steam chest cover is changed usually, Makes it extend out for more...

    Thought for our Midwest friends

All is well here now. We went storm chasing after graduation sunday. 3 funnel clouds and some hail. The storm sewers were backed up and there were ponds on most roads a foot deep. Normally we go puddle hoppin after school when it rains.. This ended up pond hoppin. Thankfully nothing came of the...

Where to find traction engine drawings.

A 1/4 scale is exhempt just about anywhere. Still check though. It is a puny boiler compared to the big ones and usually only carries 125 psi. A few videos of ours 1/2 scale on 1/2 scale baker fan http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F#/watch?v=GoEt3EPV5Xk 1/2 scale in tractor pull...

Where to find traction engine drawings.

On a 1/4 scale the area is small enough it is exhempt from even the most restrictive laws.

Where to find traction engine drawings.

Did you try to private message him on smokstak? Dick is a good guy, whenever I messsaged him on there and he usually replys within a day. He has 1/2 and 5/8 scale bakers I believe and also prints and some castings for a sawmill in half scale.

Where to find traction engine drawings.

Most Half scale case engines are of ternings castings or from augie ottos castings. Ours is a mixture with major work done to the valve gear to crank out 20 horse while others are making 13-15. I have a friend with a third scale that can make that!! Our quarter scale was designed by a...

    who does silver soldering?

Dad being a plumber has crammed all of this into my head, For anything we do 6% is plenty of strength (that is 6% silver) But, if you have a steel to steel, or copper or brass to steel you MUST use 45%. As for boilers it doesnt need to be 45% but it should be higher than 6%. 45% is quite...

    3/4" Pennsy A3

I cant think of anything that requires alot of milling on one piece to the point of deformation. I think the money saved from not using brass could be used to buy the copper for the tank and boiler. May just go galvanized for the tank and coat the inside

    3/4" Pennsy A3

Kvom, Brass would actually be heavier. It is more dense but in this size it wont make much difference. I plan on using steel as you say.

I finally have a Lathe Project...

I have a 16" south bend that had the same thing happen to it. It is an older one, 1922, so all the babbit was melted out but we do that for the steam engine so no biggie. Also something you may want to try is electrolysis to remove rust. I talked to a good friend about cleaning the ways and he...

    3/4" Pennsy A3

Lookin' good!!!!! You are a step ahead of me, I just got the metals list needed for the trucks and hope to get started soon. Have fun One question... Did you start with 2 1/4 steel for the wheels or 2 3/8? I wish Kozo would have had a bill of materials after each section or something like...

    Quality Micro lathe

I have been looking around for a nice micro lathe to aid in building my 1/4" scale steam locomotives. One that caught my eye was a 7" grizzly, has anyone ever had one and how do you like it? I dont want to drop alot of cash but I dont want to cheap out. I would like to know what anyone has and...
