Spring Winder - Build your own springs

The patent was in 1935 so it has expired. I was given the article by the author without a mention of an existing product. Done deal now and no way to detract it if there is a infringement. But I think 80+ years means it is expired.

Spring Winder - Build your own springs

jlchapman, I just ran across this article. Nice build. The design and drawings were published in Model Engine Builder in issue # 19. I have no objection to showing the build pictures although the isometric drawing of the winder and any other drawings are copyrighted by me. I'm OK about you...

    $40 digital readout

I put a set of the cheap iGaging readouts on my lathe. They are spec'd to be within 1 thou over 4 inches. They are better than that and even if they just met the spec, that is quite good and usually better than my machining skills.

    Chevy V8 Scale Engine Plane

You need to make a series of tube stiffeners that can be clamped on the bar stock diameter. Use worm gear hose clamps to hold the stiffeners on the workpiece if you cannot weld tabs on the tube for clamping screws. The tab approach is better and stiffer. You should also mill out most of the...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

I have the board files but I have never had a set of boards made so that may take a while as I learn what and how to do it. If you need a single ignition system, I do have a spare built system. I would sell it if you are interested. Let me know at editor at modelenginebuilder.com.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

I have e-mailed Dave Sage, the board designer to see if he will either order more boards or release the board design files. The boards were constructed in China and are quite nice. I just built the last 3 of the 11 boards I was given by Dave or I could offer a few. Give it a few days to see...

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

I should also mention that the ignition circuit will also trigger from points or a reed switch. Both are nearly indestructible. The reed switch will function very nicely for single cylinder farm-style engines. Triggers with a magnet just like a Hall Effect Device.

Model engine CDI easy and cheap

Not to blow my own horn but we published an excellent ignition system in Issue # 34 of Model Engine Builder. David Sage and John Gedde are the designers. It will handle a V-8 up to around 10,000 RPM. Within the Bay Area Engine Modeler's Club, there are probably 30 of those systems operating with...

Black Widow Blown V8 -----Mistake in price

Dwight Giles, the developer of the Black Widow, still has three casting sets available. The price is $1450 plus shipping. These are the last that will be available. His phone number is 707 648-71481, he does not use the Internet.

Info on piston ring pressure requirements?

Sounds a bit extreme to me. The Forums are great tools for what is really a fairly isolated hobby.

Info on piston ring pressure requirements?

OK, if you say so. But it is morally incorrect to cheat a widow out of her method of making a living by passing the information on in a different media. Magazines in this hobby are marginal efforts and we've lost too many already. Let's not contribute to their downfall in any way, OK?

Info on piston ring pressure requirements?

Sorry, but I think expressing the article in a spreadsheet isn't standing on the shoulders of giants but cheating the providers of the original work. I see no advancement of the science in this case and certainly no deriivative work.

    S / S CDI ignition system

You could be getting switch bounce if you are using a microswitch. But I see that Roy has already suggested that.

Info on piston ring pressure requirements?

Not a problem. Frances has listed the three issues that contain the Trimble articles on the SIC Website. www.strictlyic.com will get you there. The only thing Trimble got wrong is the temperature for heating the rings. His recommendation is too high and at that temperature, the characteristics...

Info on piston ring pressure requirements?

Passing around that spreadsheet really violates the StrictlyIC copyright. Posting it on this forum does too. Frances Washburn, Robert's widow still sells back issues of the magazine to make a living. Making a spreadsheet for oneself from ones owned copies of the magazine is OK, it just should...

    Pin vices and valve lapping

Compressed air is OK, you cannot get the pressure above the combustion chamber pressure with most air compressors. Put the test rig in water to really check for bubbles without having to worry about hearing acuity. Any bubbles mean the lapping is not good enough.

Assembling the crank, crankshaft, encounter difficulties

The simple way to align the main shaft is to use a single rod of the correct overall length. Assemble and fix all the parts on it and then cut away the shaft where the throws (eccentrics) are located. This ensures a straight main shaft. You can make some simple cradles (a stand with a U shape on...

    Micro distributor leakage

Having two distributors and two ignition systems can cause a problem because of cross-talk between the electronic ignition systems. A friend tried two distributors with separate electronic modules but that caused a great deal of cross-talk and the engine would never start for that and a few...
