I'm compiling your pictures and instructions to study. My major problem will be to find a real hardware store still in business... There is currently only one that I know of in a 50 mile radius! The big box stores are such a pain to find anything.

I have a 7x14 Micromark with imperial leadscrew. The secret to threading withe these lathes is not the thread dial, but leaving the half nuts engaged when threading, weather having a metric or imperial leadscrew.

If you, by mistake, cut it too short, you can always drill and tap the cut off end for a SHCS and adjust the screw to where the taper ejects as you want.

I would extend the tailstock barrel, insert the problem taper until it seats properly. Then mark the taper where it emerges from the tailstock barrel. Craig, I assume you have a 7x lathe, as no other type of lathe has this problem that I know of. If so, a normal MT2 taper is too long for the Tailstock. You can purchase a drill chuck from Harbor Freight and other sources with a shortened MT2, or you can cut off a bit of the one you have. I have...
