    Ford's Quadricycle Engine

Very nice Ray! My engines, including my full-size Kitchen Sink Engine are just taking up bench space. John W

    Ford's Quadricycle Engine

I’ll bet it was getting hot. My kitchen sink engine is only good for a couple minutes before it’s too hot to get at all close to! I like the sound, I wonder how Henry’s engine sounded? John W

A run is a success Ray, congratulations!!! Love it. John W

    Ford's Quadricycle Engine

Awful close to hearing that first run Ray! John W

What is your purpose in getting into the hobby of building model engines?

I grew up racing motorcycle back in the mid sixties, and as there were very few bolt on performance parts at the time (especially ones cheap enough for a teenager to afford!), I began my own trial and error engineering in my high school metal shop. I still ride motorcycles at 72, but my racing...

    Ford 302 V-8 engine in 3/10 scale

Thanks George, you’ve not only built some wonderful models, but an impressive legacy of help as well. All of us have benefitted from your willingness to offer help and guidance, and the modeling community wouldn’t be the same without your sharing! John W

    Ford's Quadricycle Engine

Things are looking great Ray. I love the use of ignition system technology to ensure a running model. I can’t imagine building Henry’s make and break system in model scale!!! John W

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

Joel from the video site got back with me and he’s going to get some additional pictures, as well as any measurements we might like. He’s also checking to see if there are any drawings available as he’d love to see a model built of this unique engine. In the meantime, he’s provided another...

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

I’ll see if they’ve got other pictures of the heads Ray. I’d like to see the insides of those as well, as the separation of intake and exhaust systems appears to be a bit mysterious, especially the way the intake seals during the exhaust cycle! John W

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

Oh, BTW, the owner of that channel has replied to me that he is willing to provide any info our group may be interested in regarding this engine. So, if anyone wants to tackle a scale model of something like this? John W

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

The Wright Brothers Flyer crankcase was an aluminum casting (I believe), so the aircraft and probably motorcycle usage was well known by 1914. John W

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

Yeah, that casting looks interesting, huh? The intake valve guide must be a pretty tight fit within the stem of the exhaust valve! John W

    Unique atmospheric intake valve arrangement

I just saw this “tube” video about a Kemp aircraft engine from around 1914 and it’s different atmospheric intake valves arrangement with the intake valve captured within the exhaust valve. They pull the head and demonstrate the valve operation about halfway through the video: I don’t know...

Bob J's No.21 Steam Engine (drawings and STP files by Pat J)

Bob, Depending on your printer and print bed, a good washing with dawn dish detergent and a follow up coat of Elmer’s glue stick on the print bed usually takes care of getting the filament to stick. A bit of time spent with calibration (temperature tower, pressure advance, flow rate, and...

Bob J's No.21 Steam Engine (drawings and STP files by Pat J)

PLA isn’t very heat resistant, and prone to deformation at temps around 120 F. PETG is more heat resistant and I use it for applications where the item might see higher temps. Living in Arizona, summer temps (especially in a vehicle) get to extremes and tend to melt PLA where PETG weathers the...

Bob J's No.21 Steam Engine (drawings and STP files by Pat J)

I’ve printed a couple double acting “steam” engines out of both PLA and PETG, and I use olive oil as a lubricant. Both have a 1” bore, do not utilize rings, and run on less than 2 PSI with no issue. I can provide links to the files if anyone is interested. John W

    Ford's Quadricycle Engine

Like you, I built the kitchen sink engine () and looked at the Quadracycle as a potential future project, not as a model, but as a full scale repro. I thought it’d be fun to use in parades and stuff, and as a way to take my hobby up a notch! I haven’t jumped into that project yet, bug I’m sure...

Ball Hopper Monitor - Casting Project

After having spent the last 3 years learning and perfecting my 3d printing, I can add that you would be better served to apply Tree Supports to your print, thereby cutting your print time and filament usage by better than half. As far as surface finish is concerned, I learned from my son, who...

    The Big Slide Thread

I purchased a NanoVNA for my antenna experiments, and can’t believe how powerful something that small can be, and all for $50 American! John W

    The Big Slide Thread

I too was worried when the instructor said we would need an E6B flight calculator in aviation ground school. I never learned to use a slide rule and worried the E6B would tax my mathematical shortcomings. I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly I caught on, and reconsidered learning the...
