    Upshur Twin valve timing

I am looking for someone who has built the Upshur Horizontal Twin. The instructions on valve timing are very confusing. I presently have the intake valve opening at TDC and the exhaust valve opening at BDC. Due to the design it is not possible to change the timing of the intake without changing...

    2021 just like 2020

Well so far the new year is not going any better than the last year. Worked all day yesterday and I still have the same problem as last year. I am building the Upshur Twin Horizontal and it does not even try to run. The problem as usual is compression. I have made new pistons and tried new...

With the pandemic situation this year we have not gotten new calendars for 2021. In the past there have been links to calendars which can be printed. There was a South Bend calendar back in 2017. Does anyone know of a similar link for 2021? What I would actually like to find is a current...

    Ignition question

I am currently building an Upshur twin cylinder engine. Plans call for a distributor. There has been some discussion in another thread about using a single ignition module with a wasted spark. My thought is to use one module with a COP coil with two high tension wires off from the coil. I have...

    NMTA 40 vs CAT 40

My mill has a NMTA 40 taper. Recently I had reason to use a CAT 40 holder. The basic taper is the same and they both have 5/8-11 threads but the NTMA is about 3/4" longer and the CAT has a pull stud. I solved the problem by making a longer draw bar but I do not understand how the pull stud...

    3D printed bevel gear

Is there a program to generate a 3D printed bevel gear. I have an old Sears band saw and it has a small bevel gear about 2" dia. I have found a drawing of the gear and I have a 3D printer but my CAD expertise is not up to drawing the gear. I thought perhaps there is a stand alone program to do...

    Shrink fit

I am trying to shrink fit a steel cylinder into an aluminum sleeve. Drawing called for .001 to .002 press fit. I put the aluminum sleeve in my toaster oven at 200* but it was still a very tight fit. I think that the temp was too low. Any input on temp for shrink fit. Gordon

    Cutter grinder

Has anyone had any experience with the U2 cutter grinder offered several different places at about $170...

    Crankshaft help

I am in the process of building an Upshur Opposed Twin engine. After four failed attempts to make a one piece crankshaft I think that it is time to go to a built up crankshaft. This is small. It has 5/16 dia shaft and 3/16 thick side plates. Every time I get half done and try to turn the second...

    Gear cutting

Has anyone tried cutting DP gears using MOD cutters? I need some 48 DP gears and I have .5 MOD cutters. the depth of tooth on 48 DP is .045 and the depth of tooth on .5 MOD cutters is .042. It would seem that a difference of .003 would not be significant on these small gears with a light load...

    Hall sensor mount

Has anyone made a mount bracket for a Hall sensor? I found one on Thingaverse but it is too big for many of the small engine applications. I am not even too sure what a good design would be so I am looking for ideas. I am not familiar enough with 3D design to actually design one.

Has something changed on this forum as far as videos are concerned? For me at least videos are just showing up as a black box. Even videos which have shown previously.

    Exhaust valve timing

I am working on a hit and miss engine from an existing design. Plans call for the exhaust valve to begin opening at 25° BBDC and close at TDC. I cannot seem to attain both of these so should I compromise the BBDC or the TDC? In other words should I make the begin to open at BDC so that it closes...

Perkins 1/4 scale hit and miss

I have been building three 1/4 scale Perkins hit and miss engines. Apparently I am missing something and I cannot nail it down. The cam is only giving me about 1/32" of travel. This makes a very short exhaust stroke and a very touchy governor. That only gives an open exhaust valve from 0° BDC to...

I just want to express how thankful I am and I am sure most others are also that we have a home work shop where we can still go to the shop and build a new project, tweak an old project or just fool around. All of us would have obtained more raw stock if we had known what was ahead but we...

    Split bushings

When making split bronze bushings is there a way to make them other than making two and machining half of the bushing away? If I make one and split it there is a gap since the thinnest saw I have is .010 so there is a .020 gap. Am I missing something? Gordon

    Silver solder or braze

I am making a crank shaft for a hit and miss engine. In the past I have machined the crank from solid. Many folks here seem to make the crank from individual pieces and silver solder the pieces together so I thought I would try it. My question is whether it is better to silver solder or braze. I...

    Ignition module

Has anyone tried the Banggood ignition module? They have an ignition module for $21.07. I am a little suspicious because they say it is for a hit and miss sterling engine. Does it work? Price is certainly good if it works.

    Software in the cloud

Perhaps I am over reacting but I am concerned about all of the software operating in the cloud instead of on my computer. Recently I have been playing around with Fusion 360 and have a pretty good start. I am concerned because recently there has been a scare, apparently false, that Autodesk was...

    Spark plug connector

Has anyone found a source for a spade connector for CM 6 spark plugs. There are hundreds of connectors made for wire termination which are only a few cents per piece but I have not found one which fits the CM 6 plug. S&S offers a connector but at $2.50 each they get a little expensive and every...
