    A side valve (flat head) engine is an engine is where the camshaft and crankshaft is both at the bottom of the engine block, the valves are also fitted in the engine block and the cylinder head is flat with the sparkplugs standing upright in the cylinder head.     Brian, David Kerzel has drawings for his Horizontal Hit and miss engine 1 on the web, on page 11 there is a method for machining a cam.

    What kind of machine is this?

    Someone might have tried to make a compressor of the engine. There seem to be a v-belt pulley groove on the attachment next to the flywheel, a pipe coming from the injector position and a nonreturn valve( might also just be a T) in the pipe.

    A beautiful model! I would also like to build a smaller version. I saw a drawing on [email protected] see attached. However it seems that the website is not working any more and there are no drawings, except for the assembly. It also seems that this model was featured in a model engineering...
