    Parting tool chatter

Great cartoon. I have to weigh in on the side of carbide. Having started in the hobby late in life without the benefit of 40 years experience, trying to free hand grind a complicated lathe tool is beyond me. I took some courses at the local community college and the instructor gave up on my...

    HMEM sticker!

My stickers arrived yesterday. Thanks a bunch. They look great. Now have to find a spot on the lathe to put one.

    HMEM sticker!

Great design. Make it magnetic so we can stick it on toolboxes and machinery.

    Problems with Steel

Lanolin from wolf hair? I think the typo was meant to say “wool”. Although maybe the wolf was in sheep’s clothing?

    Stephenson's Rocket--Working Model

There are doll clothes online for various sizes of figurines. A bit of research should turn up a period coat with tails and ruffles.

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

Hmmmm, I might lean towards the airplane myself. I was terrified of CNC until I bought a 3D printer. That has been a lot of fun and is kind of like a CNC machine. A motor moves each of the 3 axes. It is a good workout in CAD but the slicer software does all the CAM work. Just push “start”. I...

    Stephenson's Rocket--Working Model

Looks like Lego has what you need.

    How does this one work?

Here is another one. A three cylinder wobbler. Except the cylinders seem to be fixed and the plate bearing the pressure lines does the wobbling. Very weird. Who dreams these things up?

    Stephenson's Rocket--Working Model

Yikes that would be scary. Was this a piece of pipe or did you gnaw the centre out of a solid piece?

    How does this one work?

Interesting. The Wikipedia article shows the engine using poppet valves at each end of the cylinder. The engine in the photo looks like a normal steam chest for a sliding valve. I suppose a slide valve engine could be arranged to exhaust pressure from the centre of the cylinder like a uniflow...

    How does this one work?

In surveying all kinds of steam engines on the net for my own information I came across this one. It has me flumoxed. Looks like a normal slide valve engine but the exhaust seems to come directly out of the cylinder, not the steam chest. Can't figure out how this one works. Anybody know this...

3d printed box for gear cutters

Ron I am in Canada and could print this for you. Lots of 3 D printers on this forum.

    Stephenson's Rocket--Working Model

Neat boiler. How did you make the bowel shaped end piece? Hydro forming? Is it really all screwed together or is it silver soldered with fake screw heads?

    Close up work glasses

I wear corrective lenses and always wear safety glasses over my regular glasses. I doubt these magnifiers would fit as a third layer. Someone should come up with magnified and illuminated safety glasses.

    Stephenson's Rocket--Working Model

Yikes that is pretty thin. You might have to stick with a regular bronze and an oiler.

    How tight??

To me the tang on the Morse taper arbor is there to prevent it from spinning and ruining the taper In the tailstock. Its not supposed to drive anything, just give you a chance to stop the lathe when you see the drill chuck arbor move.

    How tight??

The tailstock in my new lathe did not have a crossbar in it to engage the tang on the end of the drill chuck taper. I had continuous problems getting the drill chuck seated so I took the tail stock to a machine shop and we installed an offset pin in it. Kept the drill chuck from spinning. I am...

    Hello from Fargo

Sadly the Thresherman’s Reunion has been cancelled here and I will miss it. Really enjoyed the show. The museum gets their traction engines and early gas tractors going. I especially like all the little on farm steam setups from two turn of the centuries ago. And the hit and miss tent. Their...
