Does anyone in the collective know what the thread form is on a gas canister?

I want to make my own gas tank and fill it from the generic gas canisters that are available from DIY/Plumbing suppliers, so I need to make an adapter to screw onto the gas canister........

Not sure what you are trying to do . Be cautious that any tank you fill is properly purged. If I was making a small custom tank for propane I would fill it from a BBQ size tank not a DIY or disposable camping tank. Also IIRC butane may be a better fuel in a model tank due to lower vapor pressure. Do your home work and be safe.
will this help.

John,

There is a little more than can be seen when making your own refillable gas tanks, and I don't want to show anything in public as it might tempt people to have a go and get themselves badly injured.

If you email me, I can let you know what to look out for and then you can make your own decision if you want to carry on and tempt fate.

John you still have not stated what you are doing. After a little research let it be noted that propane can easily reach 200 psi on a hot summer day. So not to be taken lightly.

Thanks for the advice/warning, gents.. I'll be careful.

Bogs, you got mail ;D

I would never try to make a refillable gas tank for straight Propane, If you take apart one of the disposable ones you will note the construction is built to take the pressure (that is for one time use only). If you ever get to take apart one of the commercial refillable ones the construction is about ten times the disposable ones. The refillable butane/propane mix gas tanks are doable if you are willing to build one that can be tested to 350 Psi Hydrostatic. It is also best to design the tank so that it can only be filled 2/3 full with liquid. There were some articles in Model Boats magazine June 2005 " More Gas Tanks & Burners" By Martin Ranson http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=599
Peter Arnot did a series in Model Boats Magazine on his V-Four Steam Engine. It started in February 1993 and ran through to December 1993. This series not only included the engine, but the Boiler, Burner, Feed Pump and all fittings including a gas tank. Peter had done an earlier series in 1988 on a V-twin engine setup. I don't know if back issues are avalible from Model Boats, but I did see the plans listed in Marine Modelling at one time.

Gerald

and remember propane tanks are filled by weight. and have opd valves.

Many years ago we used propane from a tank the same as the one on your BBQ to fuel model jet engines. We had a special hose for the occasion.

Oh, and by the way the tank is a lefty thread

Thanks John, I have replied to you.

Gerald, there is a reason I personally didn't want to mention any details about building a rechargeable gas tank, even though I have made them in the past, I don't think that the info should be made available here. If someone wants to make one, then the onus should be on them to find the information for themselves from elsewhere.

If someone gets it into their head to make one, and doesn't do it correctly, fatalities could easily occur.

You only have to look about on the net to see what some people call boilers, imagine what they could do with a rechargeable gas tank.

It is such a skilled thing to make correctly, I would recommend people just dig into their pocket and buy one.

Besides that, in the UK, you would need a test certificate for it to be recognised and covered by your third party liability insurance, and a commercial one should come with that as normal practice.

Bogs,
I do agree that most people would be better to buy a gas tank than make one. I must stress again that if someone does make there own tank that if MUST BE TESTED TO 350Psi. Personaly I have manage to make do with the small comercial desposable tanks, but when I do make one it will be strictly to Peter Arnots design and tested.
