I was planning on making the mandrel I need to turn up a few brass parts for my clock.
Decided to thread it 1/4 BSW.
Checked my list of taps and dies to make sure I had a 1/4 BSW die, saw it on my list so turned everything up for it only to realise I read my sheet wrong. I have a 1/4 BSW tap but not a die. :mad:
That put a stop to tonights work.

Will buy one on the way home from work tomorrow.

Thats it I feel a little better after having a rant.
 
Yep, ain't it a b**ch having the mill or lathe tied up with a part hanging on it that just needs to be drilled or threaded and that particular tool isn't available and then you have to order it or wait until Monday and the dealers are open. You can not continue with the next part because the machine is tied up so the project stalls and the list goes on and on. Gees, you would think we would have it down to a science by now, (yeah when pigs fly) ::) Now I feel better, how about you T'? ;D

I had that same problem with a 2-56 die.

I turned a piece of drill rod to fit my die holder and tapped it through the center. Then I used a bandsaw and cut through a bit past half way (about .050 past the tapped hole).

That gave me a cutting edge. I hardened the die and it has worked fine all the way up to mild steel.
