Hello,

I am a very new home machinist. My father was a mechanical engineer so he helped me get started in hobby machining. He built a 5 inch gauge model of the Washington 4-4-0 among other stationary steam engine models. My father and I worked on a few small steam engine projects together. I have an Atlas 618 which my father rebuilt along with a table top mill. I am finally taking steps to actually make some chips. Jim T.

Hi Jim
Welcome !! I am just down the (north) coast a bit from you. I am in Medina, OH just south of Cleveland. I too was inspired by my father and grew up in his shop. I have had metal chips in my shoes ever since I was a pup :)
There are a lot of very friendly and knowledgeable folks here. If you need help, just ask.

Pretty funny Steve :)

I should have said many folks who are BOTH friendly and knowledgeable. You certainly are. ( and funny too )

Welcome! I grew up down the road(or is it up) outside of Westfield NY. Winters are nicer here in South Texas.

Hi Tony, for "knowledgable" you can "include me out!" - as Telly Savallis once said. I spout a lot of suspect information, as not everything I was taught - or experienced - is "The Right thing".
So Jim, read all the advice and carefully select the best way to do anything. You'll quickly recognise the experts, and filter out the "well intended amateurs" - like me - when we are wrong.
