I need some 3/8” soft mild steel balls for the big Tangye governor. Does anyone have a dozen that they do not need? I don’t feel like buying 350 of them.

I bet by the time you were making the 12th one out of 3/8 rod on your lathe, it would be darn near perfect.

Sorry, I have a ton of 1/4" soft steel balls.
If you have any 3/8" ball bearings, you can heat them red hot and then let them cool very slowly. That should anneal them.

Any hard steel objects I want to soften I throw in the wood stove and next morning I find them nice and soft in the ashes. I test every once een a while the temperature in the fire of my wood stove by putting a piece of aluminium in. Melting temp of aluminium is about 660 degrees and it tends to come out half-melted, so that's the fire's temperature.
