I broke my screwless machinist vise half way through a project. It could be that I just overtightened it. The part appears to be sintered or cast? The dowel hole is a clearance and they used a grub screw to hold it in place. I fired up my little Taig lathe and made a replacement using some 12L14. The dowel pin is held with a slight interference fit. Anyway, this is good practice for beginners like myself. I got the vise from Amazon.

Looks like the grub screw hole is just far too big.
My guess would be 1/2 that size might work.
Better might be to use a spring pin instead of a dowel and then get rid of that grub screw altogether.
