New Engine Coming from Littlelocos

Hello All,
Just a short note to let you know that we intend to release an air cooled version of our 1/3-scale Parsell & Weed Hit and Miss engine kit at Cabin Fever 2020. Todd is currently working on finishing the horizontal prototype engine and hopes to have it running at the show. Here's a rendering of what it will look like.

Looks great. I have been gifted a casting set of the water-cooled version from a friend and it's high on the list to make once I finish my (many) current projects. I must say the kit looks fantastic and the plans are very nice. Hopefully I don't mess it up too badly.

Sharing a photo of the air cooled prototype in its present form. Most likely will not be running at Cabin Fever. It looks like I have a leaky valve. I do not have time to correct and still get ready for the show. Should easily be running for NAMES. I do have a running water cooled version that I will be bringing. See you there.

That's a shame, it looks great though. What do you think is causing the leaking valve?

Thanks Harry. My guess is that the guide and seat are not concentric. I'll need to make a small cutter to re-cut the seat using the valve guide. I will have a running water cooled engine though. That's also new for this year.

I as well have had trouble with getting a valve to seat proper. There are three methods I have read about: Match the angle of the valve and seat, say 45 Deg. ; Mismatch by one degree; or omit the angle on the seat and simply install a slight chamfer. Is there a one best method?

With brass or bronze valve seats, it's best to mismatch the angles, making the seat about 1/2 degree (up to the one degree you mention) steeper than the valve so that outermost diameter of the the valve bears against the same area of the seat. For CI or steel seats, I like to lap these in one-against-the-other with a very fine valve grinding compound.

are those brass or iron flywheels ? (or, what would it take to get brass flywheels?)

The flywheels and the rest of the castings are done in Silicon Bronze (C873 Everdur). They can be polished, painted, or given a patina.

I haven't worked on the engine since the Cabin Fever Show and need to sort out the valve leaks. This shouldn't take much. Here's a video I received from a builder of the water cooled version. He didn't bother with the cooling tank or the piping.

We had a great time at Cabin Fever despite the threatening weather. Unfortunately NAMES was cancelled due to the virus. Hopefully both shows will be on for next year.

I visited your website, 5" bronze flywheels is just what I'm looking for, but I don't see the "air-cooled" version there ???

@peterl95124, thanks for stopping by. We haven't added the air cooled engines to the web site yet. I'm definitely needing to take care of that. The drawing for them and the exploded view covering all four engines are attached here. I had a lot of fun with the exploded view. Enjoy!
