Hi guys what do you use to cut your steel to size ready for lathe work horizontal band saw vertical band saw cold chop saw I don't know which would be best given the short lengths used on mini lathe

Tell us more about what your shop is like and what you have done so far. You may want to post that in the "The Shop" subforum.
As for the cutting question: A lot of us have the import "4x6" horizontal/vertical bandsaw which is available under several brand names and usually needs some tweaking and modifying to make it better, which is a lot like the 7x mini lathes. Some use smaller tabletop bandsaws or have modified portable bandsaws with homemade stands. I think the space you have in your shop and the amount you want to spend will help you decide.

Welcome to our little forum. I am also in Yorkshire, The East Riding, Bridlington to be exact.
I have a small vertical bandsaw that I use for heavy stuff.
Quite often I’ll use a “knife” (parting tool) for cutting bits I’ve turned. Especially if I am making a number of fittings from a single piece of stock.
Of course the tool I use most for the relatively small stuff we work is a hacksaw with a fine blade, and my bench vise.
I hope you enjoy this fun hobby

Are you still a member of the GTBA?
I used to be, years ago, when I built my KJ66. and Tom Wilkinson was Chairman. I still have a chat with the guys at Ally Pally and places.
James Hill seems to be very busy designed a new range of centrifugal turbine engines. maybe I should rejoin.

Hey Jack,
Yes I have been a card carrying member for around eleven years now. I joined when I was still living in Floriduh .
I met up with Jim and a few others last fall at the Midlands show. Worked the booth a while, and shared a fine meal and cocktails on Friday night.
He had almost finished working out the bugs with his new design, that uses automotive turbocharger wheels for the compressor and back end.
When completed it will mean we have a reliable design with a good power to weight ratio that can be inexpensively reproduced.
Perhaps we can get an eyeball on each other If you make it to the show this year.
