Hallo Motorenbauer,
nachdem ich bei der Firma Argus um Pläne oder Unterlagen für den Vierzylinder Argus-Flugmotor nachgefragt habe und keine positive Antwort erhielt, habe ich selber ein paar Skizzen erstellt und glaube, dass man so ähnlich bauen könnte. Ein Gussmodell für nur einen Motor zu erstellen ist mir zu teuer, darum werde ich das Kurbelwellen-Gehäuse aus dem Vollen fräsen.

Hello engine builders, after asking Argus for plans or documents for the four-cylinder Argus aircraft engine and received no positive response, I have myself made a few sketches and believe that you could build something similar.

The sketches look like a good start. Are you going to provide more details like camshaft, valves and the like?

Hello Andreas, I'm glad if you like my sketches, it should be an ARGUS engine with four water-cooled cylinders. Unfortunately, there are no other documents than the images on the Internet.

Hello engine builder,
the first step is done. An aluminum round piece, 120 mm in diameter and 180 mm long, was split in the middle and the outer contour milled. Today I have the two parts touched and screwed together with four M-5 screws.
The next step is to cock the crankshaft housing onto the support of my lathe and drill the bore for the crankshaft. If this has worked, the bore for the camshaft must be made.

Hi Klaus

Great build so far, waiting for more to see from that engine. Unfortunatley I dont have plans from the Argus inline 4, but if you are interested in the inline 6 with 120 or 170 hp engines I do have basic drawings. Not too much, but maybe that helps.................

Thank you very much for your offer, which I would like to use. Because I have asked the company Argus, if they still have documentation for the four-cylinder engine and they answered me that they unfortunately have no documents from this period. My e-mail address is: [email protected].

Hi Klaus

Mail is on the way in a few minutes, i do have a lot more infos from engines of that period, including the Gnome Rhone engines too. I will make a complete list of things I have, an send it all to you. If there is interest of more stuff just give mail!

Hi Klaus. Sorry I don have any more information other than those links, which I just used Google. I was hoping that there might be an engine in a museum closer to your homes in Europe & ideally you might be able to contact them or obtain additional documentation. Sometimes museums will work with an individual to obtain scans of maintenance manuals which can then be used as background image for CAD drawings knowing other fundamental parameters like bore & stroke as references.

Sometimes you can get lucky & someone has done the basic research, just for the fun of it to make 3D Cad model, but I didn't find any of that particular engine

Hello engine builder, it took a bit longer with my engine, because it could not turn after mounting the connecting rod bearing of the crankshaft.

When examining the design, it emerged that the connecting rod bearings had to be narrower and the pins on the crankshaft also had to be reduced from 10 mm to 8 mm in diameter. It was a very time-consuming job that cost me a lot of time.

Servus Klaus,

recently I saw an sectioned Argus Typ 4 here in Deutsches Museum, Flugwerft Schleißheim. If you need some detailed Photos, let me know. I'm there regularly.
