Dear fellow scrou....... recyclers. What can be cannibalised to get a pair of right angle bevel gears for a steam engine ball governor? Need to be about 8 to 12 mm. major diameter. Your experienced advice appreciated.

They might be a tad larger than that from memory, but I used a pair from a cheap (~$10) right-angle drive adapter for an electric drill, for the flyball governor on my Rupnow Hit and Miss. I guess you could turn the OD down a bit if you needed to...

If you have the appropriately sized involute cutter they can be home made but I believe it's a bit trickier than normal gears to achieve.

Cogsy - Strangely just looking at an old Stanley R/A drive. A bit too large but may be OK if nothing else surfaces.

Go to the nearest RC model shop. they have many different kinds and sizes of metal bevel gears, dirt cheap.

In the model RC shop look for replacement gears for car differentials , the replacement kits usually have 1 or 2 larger gears and 2 smaller gears . You can get metal as well as nylon ( plastic ) sets .
They come in sets for different scales so check them all out .
Good luck

I sent Ripper this link to a supplier yesterday when he asked on another site, at 7 Euro for a pair of suitable brass bevels it is hardly worth looking around for something you don't have to take them out of.

Also very good for small hex metric fasteners.

Sewing machines and electric mixers might give you the size you need.

Try Ebay as they have bags full of them. If you want small gears and are willing to pay for them try PM Research, believe they have a local supplier in the UK now.

Cheap right angle grinders. Harbor Freight frequently has them for under $20.

You might try an old Singer sewing machine with a rotary hook. The have bevel gears about the size you are looking for.
