Hi,

Early last year I bought two might come in useful items from charity shops.

Photographs.

The first was a small Indian made brass ash tray.

From another charity shop at another time a necklace stand was bought which might have been used in a jewellery store.

This year I went into a charity shop and found another one and the same day in another charity shop found another two! The first bought is the clean one.

Having spent a fortune on these articles a total of nearly £5 something needed to be done with them. So as I have many stationary steam engines I decided to make something they could drive. The result so far.

I have yet to figure how it will be rotated, maybe further charity shop purchases will be necessary. I will start saving.

Regards Tony.

Hi,

I had a look in my bits and pieces to see if I could find a drive system for the ride. I found a worm and wheel and some thick wall square section aluminium tube.

The ends of the tube were machined square.

In one end of the tube a slot was milled to accomodate the worm wheel.

The worm was machined so it would fit inside the tube.

At this point the wooden base was remove from the base of the stand and it was found that what was thought to be a pressing was in fact a casting. So the drive system took on a different direction which will be lower and simpler.

I will complete the gear box as it it bound to come in for something.

Regards Tony.

Hi,

Today I finished the gear box and ran it in it will only need bearings fitted to finish it however if it it used some time I expect it will had another gear housing.

I went on to make a bearing for the ride from I think the remains of a candle stick.

A block of wood, a 4 jaw chuck and the lathe tool were used to mark out the fixing holes for the bearing.

Finished bearing.

A bit of a twirl.

Possible drive system.

Possible motive power.

I will need to get some gears possibly Mecanno so I can work out gear ratio's. A bit of a video at:

Tony,

I just love how you make something out of nothing. I always look at you posts to see what your latest venture is like.
I like the Indian ash trays as little gondolas on the ride. I think my dad has some of those ash trays but whether he has four I don't know.
A clean and a polish and the paint inside makes them look just the part.
Looking forward to seeing the finished (fairground) attraction.

Regards,

Colin
