I found an Aloris tool post last week in a box of junk I bought several years ago. I had no idea what it was good for back then, but after watching some you tube videos made by "Tubalcain", the light dawned on me, and I realized I had quite a treasure. I made a new center bolt to hold it down onto the compound rest on my 12" Craftsman Commercial lathe, and it works beautifully! It beats the heck out of the original slotted bolt they called a tool post from the factory! Just goes to show, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks :)

I recently purchased a QCTP, it's not the wedge type, but a "push" type, although they look very similar. The only hassle was that all my tool shanks are 20mm thick, which fitted the 4 way post fine without any shim. I had to purchase a set of 16mm shank tools to suit the new tool holder. I have 2 options, I can machine my old tools down to 16mm, or make some extra holders to suit them, I still want to use the old tooling as I have a lot of spare carbide tips to suit. It's quite fast to change over tool posts if I have to. If I had purchased a QCTP to suit the 20mm tooling it was a lot dearer, so I thought it was a good compromise. I think that I will make some special tool holders to suit.

Here's the one I have. http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L292

WOW Paul! I see what you mean about the prices. I had no idea what those things went for, and haven't looked anywhere to check. I got the Aloris, two other posts that were similar but another brand, and a fourth one that looked like it may have been homemade by someone who knew what they were doing. That fourth one is too big for either of my lathes, so it will remain in my junk box, but the other two (besides the Aloris) will probably be used in the future, or maybe the three will be traded for something else I need :)

Swifty,
If you measure up accurately, spare toolholders are very easy to make, especially if you dovetail cut a length of bar, then cut them off to the height required.
I use tooling from 3mm to 20mm wide and am about to make dedicated holders to suit, meaning that if you are using say 3mm to 6mm, you can save on material by making the holders only 1/2 height, as long as it covers most of the piston in the main block. I have got the materials to make at least 20 to 30, at a cost of £5 from the scrapyard, just need the time to make them now. I am snowed under at this time installing a brand new machine in my shop.

This is how to make a very cheap and efficient toolholder holder for the type you use if your collection gets too large for the benchtop or top of the lathe head.

Hi John, I have already made a holder to suit the 20 mm shank cutters that I have, I just had to wait for a dovetail cutter to arrive. I will certainly make quite a few more in the future.

Paul.
