Looking at the posts on turbine engines I am very tempted to give one a go. As there seems to be a fair amount of spot welding, can anyone direct me to plans of a sturdy spot welding unit

Thanks Portlandron. I've got one of those transformers so I'll give it a try

Herbie,
I'm a ( or was) a Certified Welder and My wife a retired consultant orthodontist and my daughter is-----------------
My spot was was a mere second hand spotwelder which cost a mere £20. True, I had to make more arms out of copper earth rods but you get the idea? My wife's machine was minute and had a capstan head to do the various wires and stainless bands and really there is nothing to such a machine-except the price. However, satisfactory 'spot welds' can be from a conventional stick welder if a carbon rod is exchanged for a welding rod. I stuck a new rear valance on my 1963 Mini Cooper with one. That meant going through three thicknesses of body metal.

However, you might have read that I have bought a scrap bargain basement Mig/Mag welder. Apart from changing the torch with two faults, it seems fine enough. But it will 'plug weld' as an alternative to doing a spot. Basically, all that is needed is a modified nozzle( cut with a hacksaw, perhaps) and a hole drilled in one part of the thing to be joined. You literally fill the hole up and flash off the surplus weld. However, a modified nozzle does not require a face/headshield as it is pushed onto the work at a fixed distance.

You will have to forgive me but there are stitch Mig welders and single side ones but they are expensive and scarce. I've used them but the suggested simpler tools do work perfectly adequately.

So I hope that there is a cheap solution

Regards

Norman

Thanks guys. Lots of good info there. I am going to start making one today if I can convince the "leader of the opposition" she needs a nice new shiny microwave :D
Will keep you all posted in the WORK IN PROGRESS forum.
