Hugh, welcome to the forum.
From reports on a few forums and some feedback from a mate who actually tried it, the barbell weights are incredibly hard when it comes to machine.
When I wanted a chuck backing plate, I got a 30 mm slice of 165mm diameter grey cast iron from:

It only cost about $30 for the slice and I got some brass while I was at it. I guess I was lucky enough to be within driving distance..... but it was nice to machine.
