I am looking for either a cheap single-phase surface grinder for sharping blades and planes or plans to make one. Right now I manually sharpen my plane blades with a Japenese water stone and this works great, however I can't sharpen my 12" planer or 6" jointer blades. My shop is small with limited power. Previous owner only ran 30 amps to the shop.

If all you want to do is sharpen planer knives, a surface grind may not be the best tool. The smallest is a Sanford, they sell for to much money but only have a 6" travel, My 5 x 10 will just do 12, not 12.25. so a 6 x 12 or 6 x 18, then have a 48 x 60 foot print and weigh 1000+

A buddy has asked me to do his knives but it has yet to happen. Flood coolant is needed to avid burning the knives, and those machine are more $$.

I have what you need, a Cincinnati No.2 cuttergrinder. With a cup or saucer wheel you would be back in business in no time.

Most if not all surface grinders that size need 3ph, but that can be provided by a VFD. I bought a used 6x18 for $500 that works well. No coolant, but if I restrict DOC I can avoid burning the work. Still you'd need some grinding wheels and a diamond dresser along with the grinder. Not sure of the weight, but 1000+ is a good guess. I move it around the shop with a pallet jack when not in use.

Grinder313; how much?, how old?, single-phase?, accessories?, location?

I've got a Harig 6x12 with a magnetic chuck and coolant. It's 3ph, but I have a phase converter on it.
