Had an exciting morning.

For the past few weeks, the air conditioner air handler, which is located in the attic has been making a fearsome noise, kind of a loud throbbing sound. I had checked a few things out previously. The squirrel cage turned smoothly and there was no bearing noise. There was a little vibration in the unit but it didn't seem like enough to make the kind of noise I was hearing.

I decided to give it one last look today before I called the air conditioning service company out which was sure to cost me at least $150 and maybe closer to $1,000 if they decided I needed a new blower. My squirrel cage and motor are one integral unit. The blower is made up of a top half and a bottom half, both have louvres and blow air, but the motor is inside the bottom part. Also there isn't much clearance between the bottom of the blower wheel the bottom of the housing.

To make an already long story short, I put my hand up inside the bottom of the blower unit and turned it slowly by hand while I felt for anything out of place. Turns out a large label, probably 4" x 6", that had been stuck somewhere inside the unit by the manufacturer or installer, had come loose and had been sucked into the blower where it plastered itself against the inside of the bottom set of louvres. Once I removed it and turned the air conditioner back on, the sound was back to normal.

Think I dodged a financial bullet.

Congrats on your financial "windfall" ... get it, "windfall" as in blower/air-handler in the attic. :D

I had a terrible noise in a car once and the service manager had a smile on his face. He told me he thought he knew what it was. So he stuck his arm in under the bonnet and retrieved a piece of paper in the air conditioner which had fallen out of the glovebox and lodged in the vent somehow and got sucked up against the fan.

Kinda similar :)

$150 saved. Love it. $75 for the missus and $75 for workshop toys. :D

Shouldn't that be more like $145 for SWMBO and $5 for your Starbucks latte ?? :p

You are lucky Chuck. If that had been me sticking my hand down into a tight, hard to see place in a machine in my attic, it would either have been a hornets nest or a live rat down in there!!!:eek::eek:

Yeah, living in Texas where we have an abundance of rattlesnakes and scorpions, sticking your hand in a place where you can't see isn't very smart most times. But, I figured anything that managed to get inside that blower would probably be long dead by now.
