Can anyone tell me how this chuck mounts? Or do I need to keep looking for another chuck. Putting it on an enco 9x20. I don't have a clue as to the mounting plate it requires.
Thanks
Wil

Looks like a chuck from a wood lathe , take it apart iff those bolts go all the way though it wont be strong enough for metal .

Some very very old metal lathe chucks were made this way, but I agree with chipenter, it looks more like a wood lathe chuck. If you were very lucky you might be able to thread the back of the chuck for your lathe spindle nose, but every dimension would have to be exactly right, and you would spend a lots of time and bother doing it, and then end up with a marginal tool at best. The other thing I would be concerned about is safety, I wouldn't want to put my face in front of this thing anything above a crawl. I wouldn't trust it not to lose a part. I would get myself a proper lathe chuck and be done with it.

My first lathe, a 9x20 Grizzly had a 4 jaw that adjusted like yours. The difference was that the Grizzly came with a threaded bore that screwed onto the spindle. After a LOT of kanoodling with that chuck and getting terrible results I gave up and used a 3 jaw for everything with appropriate consequences.

Then I came across an inexpensive ($80 USD) import 4 jaw that looks like this:

and discovered the value of a real 4 jaw chuck. Now I use it all the time. Do not waste time or money trying to get that chuck in order. You'll be forever cursing it IMHO!:wall::wall:

Thanks fellers, I guess I'll be on the lookout for a good 4 jaw.

it is a wood lathe chuck
there are a couple styles of lathe chuck mounting direct mount and backer plate style
you need to get the kind to match you lathe spindle nose , so most spindle nose types are available in either direct or backer plate so in order of most desirable to least would be a D series, hardinge spindle, threaded and L series. low buck chucks can be from places like CDCO or enco grizzlly and harbor freight . super nice ones are from companys like buck and then several full out industrial grade.

yep looks like the 4 jaw that comes with the grizzly except missing threads . measure it out you may be able to thread it.
