Hello Fred
in "The model engineers workshop manual" from Geo.H.Thomas, on page 99 i may read :
Photo 71
Ball turning tool for
method 5. Designed
by J.A. Radford and
modified by GHT.

Jacques

Hello Jacque,
I have that book, but I left it at work yesterday. :-[ That is why I could not remember J.A. Radfords name. I want to make/need a ball cutter for my lathe. I like
Steve Bedair's model but would like to see the plans of the up and over. To make his successfully, I will need to make this-
ATLAS/CRAFTSMAN TYPE CROSS SLIDE (A-11). At http://www.statecollegecentral.com/metallathe/A-11.html
Otherwise I won't have the heght I need for the cutting tool.
I think that some people have modified a cheap boring head into one.
Thanks for the answer and the help.:)
Regards,
Fred

Here is a picture of an up and over ball turner I made based loosely on Geo Thomas's design:

Hi Fred, Just a quick note.... We have done quite a bit of talking about the ball/radius turners earlier on in the year. There are quite a few re-designs on Steve Bedairs type too, maybe one would adapt to your lathe without the new parts?

If you use the search function on the tabs at the top of the page and type in "ball turner" and hit enter... loads of references come up, you are bound to find something of interest in there!? (most of the posts are in 'tips and tricks' or 'tools')

Hope this helps, Good luck ;D

Ralph.

Here is mine, made by just following GHT's instructions, fun to make & great to use, recommended as a ball turner.

Hello and thanks to all of you. I will try to answer you in order of replies.

cfellows- I like your ball turner and want to know where I can get his plans. I have his The model engineers workshop manual", but he does not show his plan there.

Divided He ad- I PMed you and I did read those threads. That is part of the reason I am trying to make one. I will probably end up making more than one, before I am satisfied. I did try Guy Lautard's incremental system and got frustrated! :( I will give it another try soon.

DICKEYBIRD- I will take anothr look at it and try to figure out what you did. I have considered making one out of a boring head and a boring bar holder Aloris toolholder. I presume that I will have to have some sort of oilite bearing in the hole through the boring tool holder hole.

old-biker-uk- That is what I would like to get the instructions for.

They all look very nice.

I have been trying to find plans for that on the net without any luck so far. I did find this on Ebay UK - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MODEL-ENGINEE...hash=item290247176268&_trksid=p3911.m14.l1318
But I don't think that is as classy as GTs version!
Thanks again for the replies and the hellp!
Regards,
Fred

DICKEYBIRD,
That is a very nice looking tool. I have an old boring head that I might adapt. It is a single hole tool that I have mounted on a 1/2" shaft. I have a boring bar Aloris tool holder that I can probably put bearnings in.
Thanks to all of you for your help.
Regards,
Fred

The original design of the up & over tool was by J.A.Radford in ME vol. 134, pp968 (1966). GHT mentions his own modofications to the JAR design in an article on Ball Handles in Vol.144, pp141 et.al. I am sure GHT also published drawings of his mods but I can't find the reference.

Mark,
I am ashamed to admit that I have never seen one of the magazines that you are referring to. Years ago I received HSM and Projects in Metal. I eventually let my subscription stop! :wall:
That was one of the worse thing that I could have done.
Are the magazines/ articles available on line?
How can I get copies of the articles?
Thanks for the help.
Regards,
Fred
