Greetings to all. My names Chuck but usually go by Grumpy Gator or just The Grumpy One. To be completely honest, small engine building is not really my main reason to hang out here. I love all things mechanical and very much enjoy seeing all of the engine work on this site, but I'm primarily here to look at the mechanical concepts and machining end of things. Just purchased a used Grizzly 10x22 lathe and have a long way to go to getting it up and running. Used to do a little bit of lathe work on an old Craftsman lathe, but that as most of my life was a loong time ago. In my career, I've built a lot of stuff usually by designing it and having machine shops make the parts and then assembling it myself. Currently, my main interest is actually astronomy and telescope making, but you'd be surprised how similar the stuff you guys do is similar to what I need to do. I know, there are telescope groups, and general machining sites out there, but your stuff both mechanically and philosophically seems to be a good match for me. Who knows, my next telescope mount might very possibly be from a modification of one or more of your design ideas. So, if you don't mind me hanging out here every now and then, and of course, staying on topic, I'd sure appreciate it.

Hi and welcome Chuck. You have come to the very best site for all machining tip and tricks.

Welcome Chuck,

How about trying a binoscope. I don't use mine much since I caught the engine bug!

Welcome to the group, Chuck!

I must admit, I've been passingly curious about astronomy type stuff myself, never can figure out all the constellations and whatnot, but the optics fascinate me. One of these decades down the line, I'm thinking about maybe trying to grind my own lenses and build up a telescope from scratch. Perhaps even make it computer controlled and bells and whistles - I'm a man of many disciplines =)

Thanks for the warm welcome to all!

I've built a few binoculars and have a pair of 5" f5.5 refractors that are destined to become another. I'm not even in the same ballpark as your are! Your design and build quality is far far beyond anything that I could even dream of doing. Fantastic workmanship. I especially find your alt/azm sector arm drive mind boggling. I'd like to get a better idea of your means to adjust the inter pupillary distance. You already have me dreaming. Thm: Thm:
I can't imagine what your engines must look like. I'll have to search the site for them.

Aw rats! Another grouch. At least now I know that I'm not alone. :big:

All kidding aside, welcome aboard, Chuck. I think you will find the group here to be very diverse and very open minded. One of the things that I enjoy most about this forum is the lack of flame wars.

Telescopes are neat, as is the night sky. Maybe we can learn some things from you!

Welcome Chuck, I look forward to having my horizons expanded

Jim
