If I wanted to trim down the diameter of an HSS screw machine drill shank how would i go about it? I know aluminum oxide wheels are best for grinding, shaping, and sharpening HSS lathe tool bits, but could I use a Carbide turning bit? ie holding the HSS drill in the lathe chuck, and just turning down the 1/2" Drill's 1/2" shank to around 3/8"

Scroll down since it looks like the page isnt loading; really the pdf is just glitchy.

Thanks,

you should be able to turn it. the shanks are not usually hard.

I just found this post on CNCZONE how they were talking about:
- The drill shanks being softer steel rather than HSS (true on most drill sets), but I think my above tool could be 100% HSS.
- Carbide cutting HSS easily.

I guess this answered my question.
