i am thinking about building the NANZY from a kit from bob herder. my question is has anyone build it , and how do they like it.i assume bob herder still has casting as i have not called him yet. any thoughts and tips would be appreciated. thanks jonesie

I have hear it said that his Domestic castings are not as good as the ones by Dick Shelly but can't say what the Nanzy may be like, are these cast from the J.Peters patterns?

I bought a set of Nanzy castings off eBay that were put up for sale by Bob Herder. They must have been a pre-production set after he got the design from Russel Snyder because they were terrible. Hard spots, voids, you name it, it was there. No wonder they were on eBay! I've got shares in Plastic Padding that I used to get the castings somewhat presentable. I got about half way through it and now it lays under the bench waiting for enthusiasm from me to restart it.

New casting sets may well be of better quality.

I must say, that it is an good looking engine, but not an ideal subject for a first casting build. The cylinder head is integral and the combustion chamber is domed. The governor is not a simple one to set up and I contacted Heller Davis, he of the Antique Engine site, who sent me some pictures of his that has run successfully. http://www.antiquengines.com/images/Nanzy_1.JPG

If you get a set, Jonsie, I can put up some pics of my setups if you like. It might even persuade me to get mine out again.

thanks for the replies. i think i will email him and see what he has to say about the castings.i am not worried about the machining, i have been a plastic injection moldmaker for almost 40 yrs, and now work in maint. for a large engine plant, keeping 30yr old machines running.but if i get the castings would like to see your set ups as there are many ways to skin a cat, never to old to learn. thanks again jonesie

I bought some castings from Bob during one of the Antique Machinery Shows.

The Aluminum castings were low quality and did not machine well. They had pitting and voids. It looked like the aluminum used was poor quality and of mixed type.

The Iron and Bronze castings were better quality. I would label those average quality. I had no issues with those.

I am using Stuart Castings / Red Wing Castings as the best I have ever seen for the reference to quality.

thanks for the reply. i sent him an email last week and have not heard back so i think i will look for some different castings. thank again jonesie
