I've been thinking of getting the HF Tool Grinder, 46727. I've read the reviews and comments here and on other sites. Anyone have one? How did you improve it? Some comments I've seen were that the wheels are crap. I would want to grind HHS and cobalt tools. What supplier has good replacement wheels?

i do not have that grinder but if you look at wheels made by norton, they should have a good replacement. they make top grade wheels for all types of grinding good luck jonesie

Chuck,

I bought one last year just because it was on sale. I'd like to put a diamond wheel at one end and a regular grinding wheel on the other, not the green one's it comes with. I'd also like to make better tables for it for repeatable grinding.

So far I haven't done anything with it. To many other projects. But if it's on sale in your area why not buy it? One main reason for my purchase was the grinding of carbide tools. Enco has a diamond wheel that will fit this grinder.

Sorry Chuck not much info. As far as quality, well the tables are a bit hoacky to adjust other than that it's quite heavy and is set up to use a collant with's collecting tratys under the grinding wheel.

I realize it's not a perfect system, but like others, I enjoy improving tools as much as using them.
Thanks for the info.

I bought one a few years ago and it's pretty decent after working on it. I put a good Norton A/O wheel on one end for HSS and a cheap diamond wheel from CDCO for carbide on the other.

The table trunnions had to be straightened up and tweaked plus the faces of the wheel arbors had to be faced in a lathe to get the wheels running true. It's been a good worker since the mods.

My friend bought one of those, and I think it's a pretty good deal. I'd say, go for it, and follow the advice to swap out the wheels.

Diamond is hard to beat for carbide. You can find decent diamond wheels on eBay, but they are not super cheap. Still worth it. Get the sort of diamond wheel that has a thickness of diamond in a matrix (it's a brown color) not the sort with a thin plated diamond layer, usually gray.

Here's a good one, 1/8" thick matrix, $40.
