Hello from Colorado

I love your forum, too bad it hastaken me this long to find it considering the amount of net surfing I do.

Anyway I live in Colorado, just moved here from Arizona and I still have not unpacked my shop.

I don't own anything special or fancy, just the common Chinese made lathe and mill from Harbor Freight and a bit of tooling from Littlemachineshop.com and the other stuff like drill press, grinders, welders, and so on. Not that any of the shop stuff is for machine work only, I am a mechanic by trade.

Experience is basically none. I have made small parts for my HD motorcycles and two oscillating engines. The first engine I built before the internet and was my own design until years later I discovered they are basically built this way.
I made it out some basic scrap metal and remember using a nail for the pist/con rod and crank. The tools I had at the time were an electric drill, hack saw, and file with a few common toolbox tools. I powered it with an inflated basketball.
The second oscillator I built from free plans and used the shop tools I have now. BTW the second engine runs much better.

I like to collect RC type engines and can enjoy just watching them run.

The goals I have which I hope I can reach thru the expertise of forum members is:

1. want to build a sterling engine, specifically learn some of the therory.
2. Build a diesel RC model engine.
3. Learn about gear cutting.

Don't know why I am attracted to cutting gears, but I am.

Welcome proace, sounds like you'll fit right in here. wEc1 Lots of us here just getting started with the same type machines you have. Lots of engines being built, as you've probably already seen, and lots of help available. When you get settled and your shop in order maybe you can share some pictures and/or videos of your engines.

There are lots of Stirling and other hot air engines that have been built and are being built by members so there will be plenty of advise available if you desire.

Compression ignition (Diesel) engines not quite as much. I have built several and so have a few others. Maryak (Bob) has built 2 that are documented in the Work in Progress thread. His last one was the Maryak10 and can be found at:

Lots of threads on gear cutting using a variety of methods. Several active thread going on at the moment. Once you have done a couple it is just another routine machining job.

What part of Colorado are you in? There are quite a few active members in the Denver area and a couple in Pueblo area.

Small world. I just moved to Austin from Phoenix. Lived there for 15 years. I also lived in Denver, Co for over 20 years. What part of Colorado did you move to? Hope you like snow...

Thanks everyone! Finally got back and answer the question of where I live in Colorado. I live in Gypsum, CO approately 30 miles west of Vail, Co just off I-70. I finally bought a house so NOW I can set up shop. I have been drooling over a of post which really helps with the motivation
