I just recieved the book on building a steam donkey by William M Harris, has anyone built this model ? I am researching the material for it, but was put off by the steam cyl castings to be ordered from Stuart Models, by the time I get the required two castings I would be looking at close to $100. Has anyone built their own cyls?
Thanks for any suggestions.

The cylinder block and steam chest were hacked from solid. using a lathe, mill and rotary table.

The material was cast iron sprues from a local iron foundry cut off after a pour and scrounged before they could be re-melted for another pour.

Takes a while but it's a lot cheaper than castings. The castings for this engine were offered to me for 400 UKP back in 2006. The sprues and offcut for the base cost me a bit of time and a winning smile. ::)

Best Regards
Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob, thats a great looking engine. This is my first foray into steam, so I have to learn about things like a steam chest etc. I do have access to some cast from the local foundry.
