Hello, I'm looking to cut an internal thread inside of a 1/4" hose tail so I can place a very small camping stove jet in the hose tail. I know I need to buy a 4.5 mm metric taper tap and a holder but where would be the best place to buy one of these. I was thinking msdicount.com but I wasn't able to find a holder for it. Plus they are trying to charge me $27 just for the tap itself. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The problem is that a 4.5 x .75mm thread is metric coarse - from memory you want the fine 4.5 x .5mm, these are harder to find.

Yes. The one I need has a pointed tip. The 4.5 X .75mm thread has a flat tip, which will not work. Any suggestions on where I might get a 4.5 x 5mm?

Flat bottom is a bottoming tap you need a plug tap.

Edit: wrong size the search pattern for MSC is hand tap then metric and size. If you need a special such as a gun tap or sprial point or some other featrue use a different search pattern on the site. They have nearly 5000 hand taps listed and a bunch more in each of the other catagorys. The hard catalog is called the big book and works well as a shop door stop.

Victor has all sorts of specials at reasonable prices. Small metric taps run around $3.50 to $5 each, but they have a $25 minimum order. I have ordered from them several times with good service. I have seen higher quality taps but these are quite adequate light production and model engineering purposes.

RC,

I am a little worried over your choice of thread.

I might be a little paranoid and totally wrong, but normally commercial gas jets have a larger, more coarse thread, in the case of Calor in the UK, I think it is either 0 or 1 BA, I can't quite remember off the top of my head. The 4.5mm fine is normally used for automatic filler valves, called 'Ronson' fillers here.

Are you going by what you have read, or have you physically measured them?

Bogs,

It's 1 BA :)

One thing that I do now when ordering small taps is to purchase at least 2 of the same size. I still break taps but not as frequently as I used to. In fact, I broke a 3-48 die nut the other day. So I guess I will start ordering spares for the smaller dies too.

Just my $0.02

sorry for the slow response. I have been going off of what I've read. Where can I get a 1 BA. A link to exactly what I need would help. Thanks so much for your help guys.

The first thing you will have to do is positively identify the thread on the jets you intend to use, only then can you think about getting the tap.
