Ok here is the dumb question of the day, does anyone know if the 8178 power feed offered for the X3 mill disengage so you can use the hand wheel?

I have looked at the owners manual on line and I cannot tell how you disengage the motor from the system.

I am missing something somewhere.

Thanks

In a word NO

it fits directly to the end of the screw take the plastic plug out. when fitted it makes the feed very very heavy when using the hand wheel there is a mod by Paula not sure which site but it involves shortening the feed screw and fitting a sliding collar to the shaft

I have one but I have taken it off due to the lack of feel on the hand wheel for fine work

Thanks, that answers it for me. I am glad I asked before I ordered, that would have been a real bummer. I plan on using a DRO more that a power feed and the lack of disengagement would not work.

Thanks for saving me some money.

Thanks 85 for the info. This is one time I just want to purchase everything in working order. (no modifications) I have a mini lathe and mill that I have spent years tinkering with and building stuff for. I now have the means to purchase machines that should be good to go out of the box and I am not having much luck finding the right size equipment that does this. (We tend to move on occasion and I don't need the hassle of moving 4 tons of equipment with a bridgeport and Monach equipment.)

Thanks for the info, just bummed right now because I got ready to order a new mill and lathe from Grizzly and once again they are out of what I was wanting. My patience comes before the purchase and not during and after.

That concept would be totally unknown to me! If I buy it I HAVE to change something on it. Kind of like a dog marking a tree; its how I know its mine ;D

I have that same power feed on My Grizzly X3 mill and I really like it, IF you put the direction shifter in to the neutral position, you can turn the hand feed wheel with very little extra effort at all, BUT if you leave the direction shifter in either left or right position the hand wheel is really tough to turn, you have to remember to put it in the center.

I agree with Mel on this one
I love my power feed, the handwheel adjustment in the neutral position is easily made (with very little effort)

I actually found a video of the X3 with the power feed and a person turning the crank and it did not look like the guy was putting out a lot of effort. However I decided to go with the 3 Axis DRO to start off with and I will probably go back and buy the power feed at a later time. www.dropros.com has several videos of the the X3's demonstrating their systems.

Thanks for all the input.
