Bore and OD center indicator for the mill.

The axial for the pivot arm is design so the distance to the work (ball end) from the pivot point and the distance from the pivot point to the push rod on the indicator are equal, in my case it is 1". Since it is a one to one ratio the indicator reading is accurate unlike on a Blake coaxial...

Bore and OD center indicator for the mill.

I do not need to find the center of a bore or center of an OD often enough to justify an expensive coaxial indicator such as a Blake. Then there is the argument about the accuracy of coaxial indicators. I decided to build my own tool for the mill. This is the design I came up with. The geometry...

    1913 Fairbanks Morse Tractor

I have completed my Fairbanks Morse Tractor project. I also built a six bottom John Deere gang plow so I had something for the tractor to pull. I don't know what I will do with these items. I may just give them to a history Museum in the small town Where I grew up.

IC Hit & Miss engine coolant.

I just drove into the garage and notice I had a gallon jug of windshield washer setting right in front of me. Will that work as a model engine coolant????

IC Hit & Miss engine coolant.

I thought about some kind of oil, mineral or baby oil. Both can catch fire uder certain conditions. How about machine coolant. I have considered distilled water(it will cause rust). After the run drain and refill wit WD40 for storage.

IC Hit & Miss engine coolant.

I have just about completed the build of my 1913 Fairbanks Morse tractor. It has an H&M engine with an external radiator. The cylinder is a wet cast iron sleeve but the coolant jacket is steel. I am concerned about internal rust. What kind of coolant should one use that is an easy cleanup. Any...

    1913 Fairbanks Morse tractor

I am making slow progress on this project. I have the differential, transmission (forward and reverse) , and clutch almost complete. I had to cut about 15 gears, Three of them have 144 teeth each. The area around the clutch is very tight. I am now working on the flat drive pulley and...

    1913 Fairbanks Morse tractor

I am making slow progress on this project. I have the power train almost complete, differental, transmission, and clutch. In all I had to cut about 15 gears, Three of the gears have 144 teeth and I had a problem and had to do them twice. Clearances are very tight in places. Now on to the...

    1913 Fairbanks Morse Tractor

Yes, it is cast iron. I bought a generic raw case fly wheel from PM Research. The spoke configuration was okay but the job and rim required major machining. They were about 8 pounds each before I machined a lot of material away. Not cheap but cheaper than pattern making and casting.
