    Small nuts and fat fingers

I often work with small fasteners in odd places and use a tool like this. I've also made similar ones with smaller tubing and sewing thread. Youu can align the fastener with the hole without losing the grip. For the picture I just used what was around the bench, the nut was a #10 and the screw a...

    Small Screw Screwholders

If you have troubles with small sizes then these could help. This week I had occasion to a screwholder to replace screws in an awkward place. To access these screws you peel off a sticker revealing a slot. The slot is just lager than the screw head and a bit longer than two screws side by side...

I volunteer for the dumb question..

Paper Placemat is compatible with Napkin Cad but as I found out from a firm principal, artistic liscense must be used with tomato sauce and red felt tip. After suitable drying these were placed in the working file. None of the above versions is immune to table clearing Firehose Thru the Window...

    Kludge

As of a week or so ago my friend Kludge was doing well and with a major tool gloat. Involved in some other interests presently. I call upon his knowledge ocassionally about items of a common interest and he is always willing to share with me and personally I couldn't ask for more than that...

    Paint: things have changed

Hammers-n-nails, Some of the major auto paint stores can match colors. Some body shops also have a small hand held scanner that matches colors. IIRC they need about a 1 1/2"x 1 1/2" flat area. I had a friend with a body shop match the color of my Unimat 3. As for vehicle colors, I believe...

    Acrylic Pug

To polish polycarbonate, I have spread silverware polish, or Simichrome polish on copy paper put on a flat surface and rubbed the part back and forth on it. Easier to keep the surface flat. When it dries out, add more polish.

Comparison of between Unimat 3 and Sherline lathe wanted

I have used both the Sherline and Unimat 3. I own a Unimat SL and Unimat 3 that I bought when it first came out in the late 70's. I purchased a Sherline for a former employer as the company would only allow that one in my location. The Unimat DB and SL models used round bars for the bed and...

    A really simple sundial

I've made a small round one using clear Plexiglas (can be read from backside) to sit on the window ledge. It can be turned a bit for equation of time. Also made an small analemma, mirror image, that sat on my vehicle dashboard. Cutting edge technology, heads up display (reflected image), solar...

    Six inch machinist rules

I cut a spare one just beyond 3" (round the end to look official and helps prevent snagging) and put it in my billfold. Comes in handy at the hardware store when you find something about the right size but want to make sure.

    Making Dies Using Taps

In the Jan/Feb 2008 issue of The Home Shop Machinist there is a nine page article by Jerry Keiffer on making small taps and dies, some down to .010 x 350. He takes a .375 section of drill rod, and makes a slot across what will be the thread area. He states the slot (25% the width of the thread)...

    Broken Small Screw Removal

A tool I have found useful is a long taper carbide burr.As a field service technician I sometimes have to remove broken screws, “field” means occasionally under the liftgate of my vehicle in a parking lot, no outlets available, and hand held work. For removing small broken screws 3mm...

    Sacred tools

I have tools that belonged to my grandfather and father but one that means the most to me is a tool that my mother used. Probably never having been 50 miles from home, she packed up and went halfway across the country to Seattle to work for Boeing during the war. Being of smaller stature she...

    Pumps in inkjet printers

Kludge, No, you won't regret asking. I service and repair equipment, literally microscopic, that is also used in research laboratories where such activities occur. Check your pm inbox for details. My Unimat SL is on long term loan, and my Unimat 3 came in only a foam package. A suitable wooden...
